  • swapping trans bell housings from Q4 to 3.1

hey guys, i'm a new memeber here, i believe, i may have joined years ago, but i dont remember what my user name was, some memebers may know me from bstuff.com
    ~none the less~
i heard of a myth of a myth, from someone wanting to know about a myth, and the myth is that a bell housing froma q4 trans will bolt up to a v6 3.1 trans, so this seems probable, but i dont know anything about transmissions, how to identify them, but i am very mechanically inclined, so i'm not scared to get my hands dirty. if anyone can supply ANY information about the above, i would appriciate it, thank you.

    cheers, Bob

the Quad 4 bellhousing is way different from the V6 one. You can put a V6 bellhousing onto the quad 4 tranny (the HM282 5 speed). I've done it a few times, fairly straight foreward swap.

there is specific info depending on what year both trannies are. Post up that info and i can help you out more..

yes! thankyou! thank you very much!'
the 4cyl trans is from a 1990 quad 4 gtz beretta, and the 6 cyl trans is from a 1990 beretta 3.1, if you need specific numbers or anything, tell me where to get them, or a picture with a circle would be sweet!
i'll put up a picture that i found in google, incase you would like to show me where a ID number would be, its just any old v6 trans i found

      cheers, Bob

hey, i just thought, would the pressure plate from that quad 4 fit on the v6 aswell? cuz i dont feel like splitting a trans and motor to retreive a pressure plate ( providing a pressure plate has the teeth to start the motor, i believe i have the correct term, but its late and i'm tired, if thats the same i'm laughing), but i think i may have the other pressure plate too hidden in my garage, looks like i may have to play wheres waldo

Not sure on the pressure plate, the flywheels are probably different between the Q4 and V6 so the pressure plates might not interchange.

since both trannies are '90 you won't have any huge problems. There used to be a how-to on www.quad4forums.com i can't remember my login info to post a link though. If you register over there i'm sure you'll find it.

i just did 3 of these last week. first have the trans removed. flip the trans onto the bellhousing side to the ground. removed case bolts that hold the case together. flip the trans 180 degrees over. then on the inside of the bellhousing there will be a black plastic cover. take a flat head screw driver, and on the outside edge, tap the flathead between the case and the cover with a hammer and pry the cover out. PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE ARRANGEMENT OF THE PINS AND DETENT BALLS. then remove the detent retainer and pull the springs and pins out of the detent housing. next there will be a ring on the middle shift rail. take two allen wrenches and pry at the same time on the ring, and work it off the rail. now its time to split the housing, flip the trans on its side, and there will be ears on the front of the trans by the clutch slave cylinder and by the differential. take a deadblow hammer and hammer the cases apart. the case might be tight on the 2 dowels so dont be too afraid to hit it good. reassembly is reverse of what i wrote. read this step by step and just take your time and pay attention to what you do.

                    V6 to quad bellhousings

Guys , have a late Getrag quad4 5 speed with the internal slave setup. Is there a V6 bellhousing that will bolt to it. Or do I have to get a external V6 bellhousing . Thanks .

any HM282 bellhousing will bolt on, but if you use one from a 92 and older (external slave) then you'll have to swap the reverse rail. The 92 and older rail is shorter, 93/94 are longer and only work with the internal slave bellhousings.

It's pretty easy, just 1 13mm bolt to remove and it takes some work to flip it around and pull it out.

Do you know where I can get a V6 internal slave front bellhousing to bolt to my Quad 4 internal bellhousing. Thanks

                            V6 bellhousing

So any 93 -94 FWD with the V6 getrag would do. What cars come with this set up?
