  • Tranny Help please!?!?!?

    Well... heres the story.
Some of you might have read my earlier post of how i rebuilt a 3.1 in a 1995 grand prix, and about a month later my girlfriend totaled the car...SWEET!! I found a donor car, a 1994 Buick Century 88,000 mi 3.1L BLOWN $250. Not bad. Well last weekend I did the transplant and the engine runs fine after a upper intake swap and some motor mount swaps and connectors. Now the problem I am having is with the transmission. I dont know whether or not that my problem is a sensor difference, which i dont think that it should be. The problem is I have no 1st or 4th/OD. My selector looks like this PNRD321. When the car is put into drive/OD the car will start in 3rd and not shift up or down. (Oh yeah forgot to mention that the car was sitting for 2 years prior to swap). Now when you put the selector into 3 it will start in 3rd and not shift up or down. Next, 2 position, I get 2nd gear only and nothing else. Position 1 , you get second gear and no other gears. Reverse works fine and the engine runs strong and I am very happy with the car but the tranny is going to drive me nuts. The tranny in the grand prix was good but had about 180,000 thousand miles on it. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

OK, so i believe that after doing some reading that the tranny is in default mode. I understand that the group of seven sensors tell the tranny what to do. How would i go about figuring out what sensor is bad and/or getting it out of default mode?

ok, I went and got the transmission scanned and figured out that the "B" solenoid is defunked. So I took the wheel off and and the axle shaft, and the bolts on the pan and moved the A/C line and the tranny cooler lines. I also unbolted the transmission mount bolts. Now I still cant seem to get the pan out. Is there a some kind of way to get this out? I cannot seem to find any information on how to go about this.

I can't find anything good about it (and my manuals are buried somewhere in the basement), but did you get all of the bolts out? From what I can tell, it looks like there is 11 bolts total. If all bolts are out, then try tapping on it with a rubber mallet to see if you can't break the seal on it.

What i was talking about in the previous was that i couldnt get it out "clearance"... but i got it out, replaced the "B" solenoid, which i tested and the ohms resistance was within spec, but replaced anyway becaude of the trouble code in the tranny scan. So, I just got done going for the test drive and it was exactly the same as before I am a little steamy. That was alot of work with no results. Does anybody have any ideas on what else I could do, or what steps to take. BTW I also tested the ohms on all the other solenoids in the tranny, all within spec. I need advice please???

Did you check the wiring from the plug to the solenoid? Or the wire from the plug to the ECM?

I figured it out!!! I got a wiring diagram from a local tranny shop and tested all the wires and found my problem. The red wire from the altenator, not the one to the battery, had gotten pinched and cut some how during the install. I replaced the wire, and bada bing, runs and drives like a champ. Thanks for the input guys.
