Would the 282 be a good tranny for a 3.4 dohc? I honestly dont care if its not perfectly tuned. Also whats the difference between the 284 and 282

284 is what came behind( or is it next to?) the 3.4's from the factory, so I would stick with that.

282s can take quite a bit. I see you breaking axles LOOONNG before the trans explodes. Just get your 282 rebuilt before you put it in and it will last. Now a 100,000+ mile 282 mated to your turbo dohc probably wouldnt be the best idea. Just get it rebuilt and youll be fine.

Yeah that is what I will probably do. Are there any sites that sell rebuild kits? How about a aluminum flywheel and a centerforce clutch. What would I look up (as far as car year and model) for the 282 for parts?

Looks like I am going to be picking up a 284. Does anyone know where to get these rebuilt? I know that someone on here bought a rebuild kit on e-bay.

Are you sure it was a 284 rebuild kit? I recall reading a couple of years ago that this transmission was so special that GM had to send them back to the manufacturing plant for rebuild because the rebuild parts were not released for aftermarket servicing.

                Will a 282 short shifter work with a 284?

I personally like my 282... There a lots more of them in JYs than 284s . So lot easier to get parts needed with short notice, but there are many different styles of 282s, that would probably be your biggest down fall.

there are only 2 different styles of HM282's.. V6 and Quad 4.. both are interchangeable by swapping over the bellhousings. I ran a quad 4 tranny on my 3.5 for a while last year.

the 284 is a great tranny but there are many different gear ratio options for the 282. So far the only problem i ever had with my 282 was shifting above 6200 RPM, Not sure if it helped or not but i swapped in the detent springs from the quad 4 tranny and now i have no problems shifting above 6500.. it even shifts fine at 7K.

thanx you guys, this thread was really helpful, I was drooling over the guy on GAGT.com with the 6spd GrandAM. I think since I need motor mounts, an engine, and a wiring harness, that throwing in a 6spd and a G6 computer might not be a bad idea... hell maybe ill just hide a g6 under my 94 GrandAM gt...lol

maybe not, but It was great to learn that there is hope for my car yet

Not to be a smart ass, but theres actually over 8 versions of the 282 beleive it or not.

are you talking about the different gear ratio sets or different bellhousing patterns?

there were many different gearsets, even some not listed here: http://60degreev6.com/forum/showthread.php?t=25036

but TMK the HM282 only came bolted to the Quad 4 and the 2.8/3.1 engines..

Well theres 3 different slave mounting configurations, 2 different bellhousings, 2 different mounting tab configurations, and a ton of gear sets. So that makes a hell of alot of combinations.

I see where you are going, the bellhousings were revisions. the early V6 had a bracket for the slave and the later one had the slave bolted to the bellhousing itself. The quad 4 had an internal slave as well.

92+ V6 5 speeds were the NVG T550 which is basically the same just made in a different plant.

lol.. either way the 282 has a ton more options then the 284. atleast we can agree on that

Pretty sure the T550 has an internal slave... http://www.bstuff.com/index.php?showtopic=56507
