Like everyone say 180*F to 200*F is a normal running temp. The oil will readily break down around 270*F to 280*F. So never let it get that hot. But it never should and if it does you have problems. Synthetic fluid can handle about another 100*F on top of conventional fluid before it breaks down. But at that temperature your bearings and seals are in trouble. Synthetic fluid should run cooler than convention fluid under normal operating conditions. So just adding that to a stock transmission might lower your temps 5*F to 10*F.

As a general rule every fluid in your engine should be around the same temp which for a normal engine is 200*F. Now of course going up to down 10*F is normal too. But if everything stays in that range your are always safe and running at optimal temperature for performance, mileage and wear.

      85 is only 185 tho

Its my damn converter that generates so much heat slipping as much as it does.
I need to. Ive been to lazy to look up the conversion for it so I havent done it yet. I just know 100C is 212F

If you boost power considerably the cooler temps will be more beneficial, on two separate rebuilds of the 125 in a couple of my Fieros with shift kits installed eventually (less than a year) the turboed V6 would overpower 3rd gear after the tranny fluid heated up.

On cold start up in the mornings the gear would hold under full boost, but as the temps climbed toward normal third would start to slip. I installed a temp gauge and intercooler and ran temps around 180 on my 700-R4 behind a stroker motor. I also noted how crucial having a proper adjustment on the TV cable is when to much slack caused an immediate temp rise above 200 deg. A builder told me that when the cable snaps or is to loose the clutch pacs are subjected to more slip friction and can burn up a transmission real quick.

          I prefer the cooler side.

well last night I was rather harsh on it doing two ecm program simulated 1/4 mile runs... and I didnt get over 180... granted it was cooler out but I'll see how she runs tomorrow on the way to the dragstrip.

I logged Sunday driving on the highway 70-75 and the temps were below 180. Engine temp was 196 IIRC. IAT was 93F which was accurate when compared to the bank's temp display.
In town it never got much above 180.

Actually climbed to 196 in traffic yesterday but thats the highest and that was with 98* ambient air temps... so I'm rather pleased with the cooler at this time.
