  • Question : 4t40 hybrid 4t60e

OK I am looking for a solution for handling more power in a Reatta.

I have hear just a bit about this being possible. Making a hybrid out of a 4t40 and a 4t60e. I need to build a stronger non-electronic transmission. I have a failing 4t40 and a freshly rebuilt 4t60e. I would like to make the 4t60e into a non electronic controlled trany.

Does any one have an input on if it can be done. Also how to go about doing it.

I know there are other options that include adding a piggyback ECM/PCM or having it improved at a good trany shop. All in all what remains is I am short on cash but not time. And I can get a working 4t40 and parts to do the swap. Pluss more than all I want to learn and have something different.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

You wanto use the 4t40? Electronicly, they require only a way to controll the line pressure from the force motor selinoid. That and make sure the speed sensor is compatible.

I want to use the 4t60e but I want to control it with the tv cable not with the extra electronics that normaly come alon with the use of the 4t60e.

I am not too vesed in the auto trany world, but I did see one guy said he did a hybrid from a 4t65e drive components and the 4t40 hydrolics. I am just wondering if it ispossible to do with the 4t60e and 4t40.

Well your lucky since its a 4t60e. Its vacume modulated. You'll need to change gears Via some switches. You can install them next to the shifter Or someone had a plan of installing micro swithces on the select lever. Both arn't bad at all.

Other than that. Find a late 4t60 from a 89-90 car. The 4t60 are not electronic. The 4t60E is hence the E.

On a side note. I thought Reattas had a 4t60E from the factory? What year is yours?

Jeff From Engineered Performance is the guy to talk to about building you a 4t60E/65 hybrid. Those handle alot more.

I have a 89' that came with the 440t4. It already is running the series one supercharged engine.

Thank for the info. Do to time constraints I am going with a 4t60e if there is not too much modification involed in the swap. I am doing it in 2 days. After getting it out I will decide how complex the mount diffrences are. If I can't get it done in 2 days I will go with an other 440t4 for the moment. The Army says I most likely will have to move and well the house is my priority.
I will build up a non electronic trany for it before I am done.
              Thanks again for the replies.

yah just dont use the 4t40 phrase too much as that is an actual trans from gm as well, all electronic, the 440t4 is what you are looking for, iirc they have a stronger chain than the 4t60 iirc, but they are basically the same thing. its like the difference in a 700r4 and a 4l60, the 4l60 could prob be made to work hydraulically...gear ratio changes are the funnest in the fwd cars, like 3.73s in the front

The 440T4 and 4T60 are the same tranny. The 4T60E is just an upgraded 440T4 with some additional electronics.

Yes. I just wanted to reitterate that, as well as link to the history (and comparison) of the 4T60E.
