  • 4t60e carnage...

Well I wish I could blame this on someone else or something totally out of my control, but when it comes down to it... its all my fault.

It seems to be impossible for me to get one of my own transmissions to run flawless without coming out at least once... yet one I built for someone else and it hasn't had a single issue...

Well this all stemed from me pulling my 3.05 diff to send to Jeff and get the LSD installed, and then I bought a 3.29 on e-bay for a spare, I put that in, in sort of a hurry and didn't realize I left out the outer thrust bearing and washer... this is when it started to go down hill... I then hear noises yesterday thinking its an axle, I replace on and a clunk i could hear in park rocking the car back and forth is gone, so I move on to the other side to do that axle, and when I go to pull it I see it has like 1/4-2/3" play in and out... THATS NOT GOOD!!!

So I pull the axle and then the diff cover and I find this...

So since this part failed it took out the final drive ring gear, and thats the FIRST part that goes in a trans when you build it so needless to say, yeah parts EVERYWHERE!

I could go out there right now and put it all back together since I have a new final drive ring, just gotta wait on Jeff to finish and ship out my LSD.

HM282 equates to welding in mounts, sourcing a trans that wont explode, buying a flywheel a clutch a whole clutch pedal setup...

and this fix.. is put in my spare 96 final drive ring and install my EP LSD diff when it arrives, this time remembering the outer bearing and thrust washer... all will be good.

Luckily none of this carnage is power related.. Its the tourington bearing that was between the park gear and the final drive ring that got destroyed and then parts made its way into the final drive ring which broke up the gears. You can see whats left of that bearing in the third to last photo.

I accidentaly flip flopped snap rings in the input housing and that caused 4th gear to not engauge and if it did it would grind the 4th clutch shaft. another time the return srings on the 3rd roller were well... just not there and that cracked the whole thing and I lost 3rd..... yeah the 3rd roller clutch and input sprage are separate on early modles.

Yeah this is why I went with a 96 setup and why I'm keeping it that way... 95 and older the 3rd roller sprag SUCKS! I've dealt with that one enough times on my old trans. A Borg Warner Roller bearing fixes that though, their springs are bent at top and bottom rather than on the sides so the springs never touch the inner race and get wiped out.

yeah its not the first time that I've seen the 3rd roller break. Also I replaced my input sun with a (forgot the name of the company) with one that was stronger because I noticed some galling on the teeth of both the sun and the carrier gears. I changed the carrier as well and I never had that problem again....

I'll have to check that input gear, I never did think to look at it... I have plenty of spares lying around, I'm sure if thats not good I have a good one somewhere

Pump shaft and bearing on mine looked good.

Hell I drove it home in that condition...

This was driven around the neighborhood just before I took it apart so it was still moving. I'm rather impressed it didnt make MORE noise than it did.

Don't forget 5spd swap needs custom Aluminum T-bone piece to move the engine/trans back 1" rearward on the passenger side to get proper axle alignment.

So is the pre-96 trans weaker or is it just a PITA to work on because of the separate stuff?

just crapier design more prone to failure, I don't think its weaker or anything.

your final drive looks like the 3.73:1 I had in my 1993 4T60-E. I pulled the 3.73:1 out to swap into my 1995 Cutlass Supreme while I had the tranny out of the car and found damage like that.
