  • No over drive

Hi folks i'am new here I drive a one ton dually but fuel prices down sized me. I have a 1996 olds cutlass with a 3.4 engine and a 4t60 e trans. runs and drives great it just doesn't go into overdrive. any ideas? The SES light is on with a 1870 code

is it not going into overdrive (4th gear), or TCC lockup? If it's the latter, it's usually caused by a bad Pulsewidth modulated solenoid. If you go ahead and disconnect it, it may start working again. Let me know and I'll find some data to help you.

It's a black wire, I believe Pin E on the transmission connector (under the engine airbox) This site has a diagram showing this but I can't seem to find it. It sounds like it isn't your problem though, but maybe it's worth a shot. If you just pop the pin out of the connector, and it doesn't change anything, just slide it back in.

Just got back from a roadtrip to Minneapolis. On the way back I had a similar issue pop up and the transmission wouldn't go into full lock at cruise speeds. Turned out I was just low on fluid after one of my BRAND NEW fluid cooler lines (OEM-style) decided to leak. Thankfully it was just a slow leak and all I needed was 2L over a few stops to get everything working right again. Not sure what to do with the other 6L I bought incase it wasn't a slow leak.

                        common issue...

74k miles on that one, and ready to strip with a little more power... needless to say I replaced it when I rebuilt the trans.

did the fluid have a orangish tint to it when drained? if so bad torque converter... I have a E with that problem and just spent 1250 instead and got a E rebuilt.. didnt want to take out the converter to replace and later down the road have more problems..

Looks like I'm still having OD problems. This morning the car struggled to get into overdrive and keep it. On the way back from work though it was working as it always had so I'm a little confused. Fluid is still full and hasn't leaked so all I can think is either a sticky TCC solenoid or there was some more air waiting to bleed out of the system.

If it comes and goes then your in good luck still. Check or change out the gear selector switch on the trans. One way to test to see if its out of range is to shift it into OD and go up to 50mph. Then ever so slighly try to move it up or down without shifting it into Nutral or Drive. DID you run a scan of the car?
