  • 4t60e problem

I have a 95 Grand Am with 3100/4t60e drivetrain. The car is approaching 150000 miles but the engine is still smooth and strong. My problem is that whenever I give more than 1/2 throttle at a stop, the transmission will slip. The feeling is similar to slipping the clutch on a manual transmission car with the car gathering speed until the transmission fully engages. Once up to about 5 mph the tranny works fine and will snap off crisp upshifts/downshifts. I'm not sure what is wrong with it, possibly a bad torque converter or clutch pack. I would like to drive this car next winter and would appreciate any help in diagnosing the problem. Thanks in advance.

It could be a number of things really.. but two things to check out. Considerng the milage you may want to change out the vacuum modulator(grey canister on the front drivers side of the transmission) with a replacement adjustable one. You can get that from the parts store like AutoZone. But you should have a better chance of getting the right part if you tried RockAuto.com. The last thing would be to check the accumulator springs, which will require lower pan removal. If the springs break they will cause the shifting that you are experiancing. Of coarse it could be somthing more internal but those are thing you can check. If you are interested I can give you details on both procedures.
