I hate Torsens, they suck balls because if you corner and less than 20% of weight is on the inside wheel. The inside wheel spins like an open diff, but applying power in a straight line it fine. I helped build a few race cars with them and developed a hate for them. And they are expensive.
Eric - gee, thanks for your opinion. I'll really bear it in mind.
If one happens to drive a race car where the weight distribution never sucks that badly while cornering then the Torsen unit works just fine when powering out of even the tightest turn. My problem is that I like to rotate a tad exiting the turns - which means traction loss when the hammer comes down. Distribution to both wheels (which the Torsen has a great history of doing) resolves that issue - but only on accelleration, where an LSD can have an (unwanted) impact while DEcellerating as well. When you apply power coming out of the turn the Torsen unit distributes the power to both wheels - hence 'TORque SENsing'. They DO function like an open diff if you're sitting still with one wheel in mud or on ice.
Just about every racing Quad4 "in the day" ran the Torsen, and GM actually manufactured it as an available part number. Yes, only 10 - 12 Acheiva SCX units were ever built with it already installed, but like the SCX itself GM eventually installed it in enough "stock" platforms and (like the SCX itself) sold enough units to make it a legitimate entry under the rules of a number of racing organizations (including SCCA and various Challenge series). At one time you could order the part from any GM dealership.
At one time yes.. several years ago they took it out of the catalog and they've become near impossible to find. I looked for 6 months and ended up going with a Team green insert. it works very well.
