ok...i'll do 1/4" then
...and how do I get the lines out w/o breaking them?
I had a heck of a time getting them out of the J/y tranny.....

I just wiggled and twisted they should slide out, they are a snug fit but not press fitted...

I want to do a write-up on this (w/ pics too) for anyone that wants to do it in the future.
3400-95-Modified, is it ok if I use your info if I credit you w/ it?

That doesn't bother me at all... Have at it. It would be nice info to have somewhere, especially with all the different accumulator setups.

I have a feeling that even though there are 2 diff setups for the 60-e's....I think it is just a spring/piston setup that is different..I have a feeling the shim size would work in either one.

While I have my trans all apart again I'm also putting two washers in the 3-4 piston on the back of the channel plate... and I'm leveling the 1-2 bottom bore plus one washer and leveling the 2-3 plus 2 washers... I'm gonna measure the overall difference in height when I get done.

Well I'm going to shim my 3-4 accumulator with ONE washer, the washer is 1.730" dia, and the bore is 1.740, so it drops right down in until it hits a lip at the bottom... the washer is only .135" thick but I get a total of a .235" shim since there is a lip at the bottom of the bore. Now I could add a second washer and get a .370" spacer but I think thats going a little far with how much the piston sticks out when together... so I'm gonna stick to the .235" total change.
I'm starting with a 1.765" washer with a .685 ID center hole, for the 3-4 I have to gray wheel the washer down to fit, which was simple, on the 1-2 and 2-3 I need to space it up from the center to fit since the 1.765 is JUST slightly bigger than the recess in the bottom of the bore, I could do the same as i did on the 3-4 to make it fit I think, but instead I'm using two smaller washers to space it up then the thick on the top, so the 1-2 will see a height change of .405 and the 2-3 will be .535 that is if I go this route, I may change the smaller washers to back off a little on the total spacing...
Pics of the 3-4 and the washers.
Now I guess you could say I'm getting lucky that my trans is totally apart so I get the ability to do the 3-4 accumulator. BUT at the same time I don't know if it is considered lucky... LOL
Either way I'll do one shim in that one and then the other combination in the 1-2 and 2-3 and if those are too wild or not enough I can easily change those... I think any shim in the 3-4 will improve that shift and thats only for on the highway anyways.Last edited by 3400-95-Modified; 05-08-2008, 09:25 AM.

I made my shims 3/8" thick. the 2-3 shift if PERFECT.....the 1-2 is a little to stiff....but I'm not gonna drop the pan just to take it out....I'll live w/ it till next fluid/filter change.
I'd probably drop the 1-2 downt to 1/4" next time.
here is a vid

hey guys let me bring back a old thread... I shimmed my accumulators today,Although I may have messed up,I put 3 brass door bushings in each accumulator housings..
I am not getting a second gear scratch at all,and 2-3 is really really firm,Somehow I think I may have gone wrong somewhere, and need to correct it tomorrow, before the work week starts:P
Edit: Drove it around a little more, and when it shifts into 3rd somewhere around 70~75mph it almost breaks the damn tires loose,I want 2nd to do that lol...
The guy who rebuilt my trans said that the case on these trans, will not handle hard shifts, and that it will actually crack, anyone heard of that?

what are the length of the shims you used? as installed in the tranny, below both pistons usually use 3/4" and above 1/2 inch. you can also install stiffer springs and increase line pressure. it's best to not have the tires break loose during the shifts. that's hard on non-upgraded parts. you should have a vacuum modulator that controls the line pressure. you can get an adjustable vacuum modulator that can be adjusted by turning a small screw. my 97 lumina shifted quite crisp with no other mods. just be sure you don't max your pump out or you'll damage it quickly. granted, i have the 4T65E, but this picture may help to give you a better idea. on the left is the stock set up, on the right is the TransGo shift kit. the single springs on top--i bought another orange (2-3) spring to replace the white (1-2) spring.
you can also do it yourself with the following parts: The shims used are available from McMaster-Carr online. NOTE: this is for a 4T65E. i don't know if the piston pins are the same diameter.
