  • 4T60-E

I just replaced my transmission with a used tranny. I know for a fact that the 4T60-E I put in was in fine working order when the cars engine let go. I replaced the vaccum modulator because the transmission had been sitting for about a year and a half. It shifts well between 1 and 2 but after that Iget high revs and a severe lack of power. I am guessing that there is a problem with the TCC Solenoid. Can anyone shed a little light on my situation?

Ummmm...... I think it does have a vacuum mod. On my '95, there is a tube that comes off the front of the intake plenum and heads down to the trans.

Yes, it does still retain the vacuum modulator even if it is an E-tranny.

I have put about 500 hundred miles on the tranny switch. The fluid and filter was changed at the time and the fluid is already dark and smells burnt. The car will get into OD and run fine until I take my foot off the gas then it takes a second to get back into gear. 1st and 2nd seem to be working fine.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

get it rebuilt, if the fluid is burnt so is a clutch pack or a band

OK butany ideas as to why the failure? I don't expect anyone to know for sure, but the transmission was in working order when I put it in. I am concerned of the systems that run the transmission that will not be fixed or replaced when I put yet another tranny in my car. I really don't want to rebuild my transmission and only get another 500 miles out of it. The car is a 1992 Pontiac Bonneville. Have you heard of any repetitve problems concerning the transmissions? Also is it possible to replace it with a 4t65-e and is it worthwhile?

Thanks again for all the advice.

Did you swap the torque converter over as well, or re-use the one from your car? What car did it go into and what car did the trans come from (there are 7 different ways the 60e was wired)?

I swapped the torque converter as well. The tranny was from a 1994 Grand Prix GTP. It had a 3.4 in it. I put it in my 1992 Pontiac Bonneville with a 3.8. I looked up some wiring diagrams curteousy of this website. The wiring changed between 93-94 so I rewired the harness to retro it to my older car.

get it rebuilt. make sure the tranny shop knows that the tranny in there isn't factory for that car and what you changed in the harness to make this one work. burnt tranny oil or fuzzy magnet in the pan are signs of a bad tranny. your tranny shop will be more able to tell you want went sour on the tranny and why.

How did you rewire, from the outside or did you pop the side cover off and swap the internal harness and switches?

Your speedo is probably off and shift points have changed some due to different gearing and the TCC is probably a higher stall.

Can you do a step by step of what happens of rpm/shift/gear/mph/etc.

I rewired it outside of the transmission. The car goes like a bat of hell in 1st gear. but then when it shifts into 2nd I might as well be in neutral! 2, 3 and 4 gear are all the same. I am getting some power to the wheels but it is extremely miniumal. I wouldn't even be able to climb the slighest of hills. As far as the shift between 1st and 2nd it work great. This transmission seems to even have a snappier shift point. Anything sound familiar?

extremely burnt, dark fluid is a BAAAAAD sign for 500 miles. Check the pan for excessive debris ( Lots of black goo?) and cut the filter open to check for chunks of metal. The trans sounds smoked. As for the TCC, when those have failed the car stalls coming to a complete stop. Hooking up the car to a scanner, you will be able to see if the TCC is on or off. The TCC should be off in first and second gear ( as well as p, n, r.) Just for kicks what year is the trans and whats the mileage?
