  • whats wrong?

I have a 90 Grand Prix, 3.1 4 speed auto. I was having troubles before with the TCC it would surge around 3200 when cuising around 80 and the odd time it would stay locked when i came to a stop and the car would die. it stoped the locking on a stop thing for a bit but today I lost all my gears.
At first it would slip like mad, when i hit the gas it just reved and i wouldnt go anywere so i manually shifted it and I had 1st and second, so i drove in second for a few miles and it was fine. I stoped at a friends house and topped up the tranny fluid, it was a bit low. after that it still did the same thing then i lost all gears.

it seems fine when its cold it dosent lose gears until ive been driving for a while. When it does lose gears if i shut it off and wait a few minutes and start it up again it will work fine for about 30 seconds before it slips again.

after trailering it home it worked fine again, im guessing cause it wasnt hot, i dont know, i dont know much about automatics. is this an electronic thing or is my tranny totally screwed?

When i lose gears i can move the shifter effortlessly through all the gears and i get nothing, but after letting it sit for a few minutes when i shift i have resistance in the shifter like normal and it shifts fine.

    any ideas?
    thanks

Ok nvm, the tranny is definatly screwed it makes really bad grinding noises in gear and even idling sometimes and i bought a brand new clutch for only $56, had no idea they were so cheap, I was expecting at least 200 something. looks liek i'm doing a 5 speed swap this week, woot!

Yeah a rebuild is the only way to fix that. Good luck on your swap out.

I was screwing with it today before i started pulling it and I have no gears at all and when its in park idling it makes a really bad grinding noise, then in every other gear its quiet except 2nd it makes a slight grinding noise and then first is real bad.

the only thing holding me up now is i need a monster 36mm socket to get the driveshaft nuts off, going to stop my my dads tommorow and see if he has one.
