  • Getrag 284... imput shaft bearing?

92 Olds Cutty Supreme 3.4 DOHC Getrag 284.
i dont know if anyone else has had these problems but maybe i could get some help. have a really bad rattle coming from the trans when clutch is out. in nutral or i can hear it when i let the clutch out and the motor is at low rpm im gear. push the clutch in it all goes away. thats why i think it is the input shaft bearing

so now anyway the clutch is on the rivits and was soked with oil cuz i think the seal in the input shaft bearing went. so i figured the trans was low on oil but it needed a clutch anyway so i put it off.

till today when the trans starts really fucking up. its like the input shaft really doesnt want to turn. makes really weird noises and is a biotch to get in gear. like ram it with all i got to get it to shift.

so i plan to take the trans out oviously and get a new clutch in there. then ill know for sure what is going on with the input shaft and bearing. but i dont even know if i can get a input shaft bearing....

any help in anyway greatly appriciated.

lordco has a so called "rear input shaft bearing" for 30$...

how many imput shaft bearings are there? isnt there one between the tranny housing and the shaft? is that the rear input shaft bearing? or is there another one??

the input shaft has 2 bearings, one at the front and one at the back. you need the front input shaft bearing.

putting a 282 in your car will be a bit of a task. you will need a 3.1l clutch and flywheel, slave cylender and axles for a w-body with a 2.3l quad 4 high output 5 speed. you will now need to find a quad 4 car in the junkyard to get the tranny mount bracket and steady bearing/shaft. im not sure about the shifter cables, you may need to change the shifter and cables, but those should be easy to get, any 2nd gen j-body 5 speed stuff should work.

no problem. you can try bc bearing, as long as you can get the number off the bearing you should be ok. if they cant get it, then yes, you are screwed. the 284 tranny never was servicable by the dealer, they were all sent back to germany for service and exchange units put in the vehicles. the only parts avalible from gm was the axle seals. for that reason, if you happen to stumble on a good 284, grab it and store it, they are rare.

I have two 284's in great condition.

One of the 284's has 4K miles on it. From what vehicle did your 282 come?

Call me at 706.654.1016 for potential trade/purchase.

are you sure its the imput shaft bearing it might just be as simple and the release bearing . i know the sound of that because the release bearing has went on my other cars and it sounds like a imput bearing but it turned out that it wasnt.

input bearing will make noise when the clutch is out and go away when you put the clutch in. a release bearing will make noise when the clutch is in and go away when its out.
