1997 Chev Malibu, 4T65e I believe... no dipstick to see condition of fliud, don't care, want to change it anyway, anybody know the capacity upon refill. I'm only dropping the pan and replacing the filter. Thanks

  • #2
The capacity should be listed in the maintenance section in your manual. My 4T60-E requires 6 quarts (5.7L) whenever the pan is removed and 8 quarts for an overhaul. That should be close to what a 65-E requires.

4T45-E maybe, but not a 65-E. No dipstick? Good luck.

              4T45-E

              bottom pan remove: 6.9 quarts.

I would say look in the wiki (I did an article on the 4T40-E/4T45-E), but the wiki is down right now.

make sure you dont screw the gasket up. its like 60 bucks from the dealer, and thats the only place you can get it.

There should be a plug somewhere on the side of the transmission you can use to get the level right. Just make sure the car is up evenly on all four sides and remove the plug before you fill it. When you think it's almost full, pour slowly till the fluid comes out the hole. Then put the plug back in.

its on the front. if you look around on grandamgt.comn theres a thread on how to install a trans temp gauge and where you put the gauge sender is the plug where you would check the fluid

posted a pic of where it is
alright heres a page from pfyc.com on how to install a trans temp gauge just use it for the driections on where the hole is

for the shudder you could just be low on fluid

try the trick with the pic i posted. you do it with the car running and it should dribble out the hole.
