Greetings, all. Hopefully someone here can point me in the right direction, and thanks for the opportunity to pick your collective brains.

Yes, I used the Search, and they weren't the droids I am looking for.

Have a '92 Lum 3.4 (non-Z...yeah, yeah, I know, it's a grocery-getter with a wee bit of snot). Low on the mileage, 78xxx. Earlier this summer, started blowing transmission fluid out of it. Parked it, and finally got around to getting it in the air to diagnose. Initial diagnosis was a bad output shaft seal (L). Upon removal, surprise surprise, there's 1/4" of lateral play in the output shaft bearing.

I've googled the hell out of it, and nowhere can I find an exploded view of this transmission. I'm loathe to drop the thing out if I can avoid it, but my guess is it's going to need to be on the bench for bearing replacement and all-around inspection/cleaning. Also, NAPA has no listing for any internal bearings for this thing, and Sunday morning doesn't find many dealerships open.

So, in degree of importance:

1: Do I need to yank the tranny out to replace this bearing?
2: Is there an exploded view *anywhere* out there that I can get a look-see at this thing before deciding whether or not to make my life more hell?
3: Anybody wanna buy a dented up old Lumina 3.4 with a bad tranny?

I'm trying to avoid having to spend an hour at the dealership to get a glance at their fiche...can't say the good folks at the dealerships I've called are terribly well endowed in the IQ department.

I've have to dig it out, but I have a GM 4T60E service manual in the basement somewhere that has a ton of exploded views and such.

Where are you located in Minnesota? I'm located in and around Saint Cloud.

I'd be interested to know if you can get the transmission out from the bottom? On my Cutlass I wasn't able to. Originally I was going to drop the subframe but my flexplate was chewed pretty good so I pulled the motor and transmission.

I figure get some practice for a 3.4 swap.

You can drop the side of the frame to gain access to th einnneard of the transmission but for the work you need to do it will be a bit awkward... You be better to remove the unit. the 4th clutch hub houses the support bear for the left output...

Thanks. Been wrenching on it some, and it appears that the tranny mount (the bent-tube bracket) is in the way of removing the lh side cover...and of course, in GM's infinite wisdom, they put the bolts attaching the mount *under* the exhaust crossover. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'll need to either attempt to pull the crossover or lop off the long bolt for the tranny mount (and replace with a stud/nut instead, so this won't be a problem again), correct?

Yeah the crosssover has to come off. A 15 mm and some extensions..maybe even a universal joint if needed will remove all the nuts.
