I've heard around here that the 4T60e is a great trans, and I believe it... I've also heard that the 4T65e is a little stronger...
I had a customer come in with an Olds Intrigue (2001) complaining about driveability problems, and I pulled some codes and did some reasearch to find out that the transmissions in them (4T65e) are completely shit. There are so many reports of these things taking a dump on people.
Is this only happening when mated to the 3.8? or whats the deal with these things. The intrigue is a pretty nice car, and it's a damn shame for them to have made another car with such a huge problem.

the 4t65e and 4t60e are actualy fairly simular. both are good transmissions, but thats the normal life expectency for them. im a transmission tech and its normal to see 5 year old vehicles in the shop with just over 100k km (60k miles).

they just dont build em like they used to, transmissions have gotten to complicated to last for 15 years like they used to.

mid to late 90's, and early 00's GM except for some select modles are kinda sketchy in some cases....

my last 4T60e was in a 1991 Olds Ciera with the 3300. It was a rock... an absolute rock. I guess increasing hp caught up to the design? This whole, 'just dont build'em like they used to' thing I get, but with time things should get better. I think they just design them to break... whatever, I beat the shit out of mine.

The trans are strong. Its all those granny shifting servos, accumulators and valves that cause havic. 4th hub has always been a little prick.

The reason your getting comebacks on 4t65e are that they practicly used all the shifting from the 60-e but used a stronger 2nd clutch, reaction drum, and 3rd sprag and clutch (bigger Differential on HD). To boot, they just added a pressure manifold to tell the PCM what the trans is doing.
And theres no way of beefing up 4th gear on the 60-e, 65-e or even the 65-e HD.

Only way of beefing up a 60-e and 65-e is using the V8 4t65-e HD parts into them. THe 2003 and on SC 3800 65-e is also a good canidate (diode sprag).
Racing wise, the GM ECOTEC manual shows how to realy beef up the 65E omitting 4th gear and granny shifting...Manual only.

You wanto keep street driving and grannyshifting look for Sonnax valve body parts.
