i think it depends on what motor the 282 clutch was hooked up to and what motor your 284 is hooked up to... i've been looking on ebay for a clutch kit for my 92 cutty with a 3.4 DOHC and 284 tranny and i only came up with one company selling them and the want $350 for one plus $35 shipping. now thats a lot better than the $875 i was quoted at my local parts store. i think the 3.4 DOHC has a larger clutch than that of a 3.1L for example. as far as i can tell the 3.4 DOHC motor uses a 9 11/16 x 23t x 1 clutch and a 3.1L uses a 9 1/8 x 1 x 14t clutch.

But i am wanting to know if the smaller clutch will work with the bigger flyweel/motor... or if anyone knows of a performance clutch manufacturer for my application. and i would also like to know if anyone knows of any getrag 282 or 284 tranny's for sale cuz mine is gonna pack it in soon. it has over 290K km on it and i dont think the previous owner ever changed the oil in it.

i hope i answered your question and any help in my case would be greatly appreciated

no it will not. the 282 is a push type clutch and the 284 is a pull type clutch.

i think spec makes a clutch but i went with clutchnet. they are a little pricey but very well built. they have a variety of clutches to choose from and they are the only vendor i know of that sells aftermarket pressure plates for the 284.

only 282 part i know of that will interchange is the 88 and up neutrally balanced flywheels, so you can buy an aftermarket neutrally balanced 282 flywheel(aluminum or whatever floats your boat) and it will work.

p.s. i have a stock clutch/pressureplate/flywheel laying around if you need one. the clutch is in good shape as well as the pressure plate but the flywheel is worn. you'll have to supply your own T/O bearing.

if you want these items i can sell them to you for: clutch-$40 plate$40 flywheel-$20 if i still have it. i think i may have sold the flywheel. price does not include shipping.

$85 for all or $75 for plate/clutch. i can supply pics if you are genuinely interested. if you are not interested or think the price is too high, don't waste my fucking time that is all i ask.

so if you are saying you have the all this for a 284 trans, i am very interested. However, I have no idea how to wire money or arrange shipping. i live in vancouver BC, Canada. i think shipping will be around 35$ and i have no problems with your prices. i am desperate so i think your prices are very reasonable. if you could pm me some information about shipping and how to wire the money, i will purchase these parts from you. all of them. let me know

advance auto parts sells Perfection (Zoom) kits for a decent price...the

if i ever get the money, i'm going for a clutchnet one w/ fidanze flywheel.

if you have a good TO bearing, i would get dohcfiend's stuff. if not, centerforce is the only place you can get a TO bearing and they are like $350

well i dont know exactly what is broken in there but something is seriously wrong. when the car is at about 1100 rpm and the clutch is out, there is a really bad vibration. i mean really bad. like shaking the shit out of the whole car. my hole dash just flucking vibrates like crazy. my dad said it might be a broken pressure plate or bad t/o bearing. and i think there must be something wrong with the imput shaft as well cuz at idle with the clutch out the tranny rattles like nuts. and on top of that i think something in there must be bent cuz in first gear if i keep the shifter pushed forward with a little pressure it will kinda push back at me faster and faster as the rpm's go up. like as if the gear was bent.

and on top of all that my crank seal is gone so the clutch is soked in oil so as soon as the car hits the power band the rpm whinds right out and the car goes nowhere.

but dohcfriend my dad said that with the way i drive i would be better off with a full race clutch so thats what im going with. sorry for the inconvinence

just go on their site and look for clutch parts for a Lumina (nothing listed under GP)

I'd like to think the 284 clutch can hold power pretty good as the pull style is inherently stronger. The LT1's ran with this albeit quite a bit bigger...

also the 284 has larger bearings and axles than the 282 i believe. i think they are rated at either 250+ or 300+ ft/lb

if you do not have a t/o bearing, i can supply one but it needs to be fixed. one of the brackets was damaged that went on the fork. any1 with a welder can fix it. if you want a new t/o bearing your best bet is to buy an entire clutch kit from advance or napa or whatever for around $280 i think.

i should have pix this weekend.

well i dont know how much the torque or hp the 284 is rated for, nor do i know exactly how much power my DOHC puts out, but the clutch in the car is about 1 1/2 years old and it's gone. the clutch has always slipped when im racing. now it just slips all the time now that the crank seal is gone. and it is on the rivits i know that cuz i can hear them rubbing when i engage it. and the clutch shutters as well. so as far as im concerned there is no point putting a stock clutch in a 284 trans if it needs replacing and you drive the car fairly aggressivly. 6 button brass is going in mine as well as a the race pressure plate. then at least i know it will hold up to whatever motor mods i choose to do and i have no worries.

when the clutch was replaced last it was because of that same problem with the t/o bearing and it could not be welded. or if it could it wouldnt be that strong... i cant remember but i know there was a new one put it just for insurance reasons. so i think i'll go the same way this time, but i thank you very mutch for your help and offer's.

glad you have your mind set. clutchnet is high but i believe you get solid parts for what you pay.

only other thing is with those 2 pieces your clutch will be completely different in the way it works. that nice linear feeling of the stock clutch is gone, you'll push it 75% down and it will only get tight on the last 25%.

taking off will get tricky but once you re-learn the new clutch it will be fine. the new clutch will almost engage fully just by releasing the pedal a little, so a little finess is involved especially in a gravel driveway

p.s. get a new flywheel while you are at it. your old one is probably as shot as your clutch.
