  • 4cyl to 3100 5-spd help needed

Will the 5spd in my 1991 Beretta 2.2 bolt into the 1990 Beretta GT with the 1993 model 3100 I'm dropping in it? The 1993 3100 is a direct swap for my GT, but I figured if I could get a 5spd under it rather than the Auto-trans I'd be better off. Also, Delco lists the flywheel for the 2.2 and the 3100 as the same part number, so if the bellhousing on the 5spd mates to the 3100, could I also use the 2.2 flywheel/clutch/etc? Any help would be greatly appreciated, this is my first 60V6 project and I'm really looking forward to it.

93 3100? Direct swap? Must not be a 3100, as those came out in 94

IIRC the 2.2 in Berettas had the Isuzu trans which is not as strong or smooth as the Getrag 282 V6 trans. Bell housing should be the same though.

If the engine doesn't look like this it's not a 3100.

      Hmmmm

I don't know for sure, the guy was selling it as a "1993 3100" It doesn't have the same intake the one pictured does, it has a more squared off intake and has 3.1 MPFI on it. As for the trans, do you think it will hold up to my 3.1 with free flow exhaust, performance chip, and short ram intake? That's all I plan on doing to it for now, but if you think the 4cyl trans won't handle it I'll go another route.

They came out in 94 in a Beretta. But they came out in 93 in the Cutlass Ciera and Supreme? But either way, it won't be a direct swap if its a 3100.

I think the 3100 was in the SUPREME only. I have seen those. Never seen any other 3100 in 1993.

Also, I don't know about the 2.2 bolting up. I know the 2.3 (Quad 4) does not bolt up. The bellhousing was TOTALLY different. What does the bellhousing look like on the 2.2?

the 2.2l uses a small gm pattern, same as the v6 does. it will bolt right up, the 2.2l flywheel will even work, including the 2.2l clutch if you wanted to. the tranny wont hold up to hard driving with a v6, itll blow the diff or 2nd gear up.

Well if it's a MPFI it's not a 3100. It's 140hp or so only. Not sure what 1990 GT had, it either had the 3.1MPFI or the 2.8MPFI. A 3100 has ~155-165hp. And the 2000+ 3100's have 175hp. 3400's have ~185hp. All depends on vehicle tuning and ehxaust that's why it varies.

Ok! Excellent! First I'd like to say thanks to all of you, I found out exactly what I needed to know. For all I'm planning to do with the car for now the 4cyl 5spd sounds like just the thing. The rundown is like this:

1990 Beretta GT excellent body/paint/interior $150, owner claimed it had "a blown head gasket and it pumped one cylinder full of water" engine is scrap probably, and is missing the complete intake this is the car I'm putting together.

1991 Beretta 4cyl 5spd traded chevy truck 4x4 diffs and trans for, it is now parts, engine ran good, but I think it had sensor/ wiring problems. Ran great, turned it off when I got home from work, would never start again.

"1993 3.1 MPFI" engine. Clean, runs, shipped with spare auto trans, new alternator/water pump/ PS pump, whole deal for $300, this is for the '90 GT. Only difference I see in this engine and the one in the '90 GT is that the MAP sensor is located on the back of the intake on this one, on the '90 the intake is missing, but the MAP is located on the firewall. There are some questions about which one to use but I'll post them elsewhere on the forum.

Anyway, sorry for the long post but I figured I'd let you guys in on what I've got going on. Any ideas that might work better than what I'm doing, please post, I'm always open to another point of view. And once again, thank all of you for the help, I can move ahead with my project now.

The 3.1 will replace the motor just fine. MAP mounting doesn't matter much. Good luck with the 5spd swap. It won't be an all out performance monster or anything but will get you up and running w/5spd.
