Sorry for not communicating this a little better. What I was trying to do was point out that there are other ways to approach this and you won't necessarily have to use a transmission driven GM VSS. You could drive your speedometer with the transmission and use the pulse generator referenced earlier to supply the ECM with a signal. I used an unconventional approach and made an 8 tooth reluctor ring and got a junkyard VSS from an early 90's 4x4 Chevy truck and mounted this to the differential (see pic). I calculated the pulses per mile and adjusted the RSSC with TunerPro. It's surprisingly accurate. You'll spend at least $300-500 for a decent set of gauges...maybe you've accounted for this in your budget but I'd rather spend that on something to help me go faster.

Sorry if this is in the wrong area, but I am trying to do something like this for my '89 LT1 Camaro with a T5. The LT1 is out of a '95 Z28 and the trans is from an '89. I want to make and attach a reluctor/trigger wheel to either the output shaft of the trans or to the driveshaft so that the PCM can see the signal generated by the VSS and Reluctor, which a T56 has. Does it matter where I attach this wheel? If I make a trigger wheel (like the one Scott did), how do I determie the spacing between each tooth? Any input is appreciated.

As long as you can edit the number of pulses per mile in the ECM, it does not matter how many notches you have. I would put four to six equally spaced notches about 3/8" wide.

Ok, thanks for quick reply. Where/how should this be mounted and mount it on the driveshaft or output shaft?

Mounting it to the drivetrain requires some planning and work since the driveshaft moves up/down and in/out with the rear axle travel. We experimented with a two piece trigger wheel mounted to the yoke on the rear axle but we never came up with a cost effective universal unit and abandoned the project.

On our conversions, we modify the speedo cable to use an inline VSS. Pretty simple solution.

Ford VSS are hooked in at the base of the cable where it goes into the tranny. So maybe that's another reason most of the swap guys like to use Ford T5's.
