96 transmission in 97

ok the transmission in my 97 grand am se with a 3100 is having problems I know it is on its way out my question is that I have a transmission from a 96 lumina with only 1K on the rebulid are these the same I bleave they are but want to make sure befor I take every thing apart

both 4t60e's? I'm assuming?

if so tag on the 97 should be 7BSW 2.93 final drive, 37/33 chain gears 3.29 diff 1630 converter.

a 96 Lumina is a 3.1 equipped w-body, tag on trans should say 6AFW, this will net you a 3.33 diff, 35/35 chain setup and a 2095 converter.

Only issue I see here is your shift points being messed up since the gear ratio changed... I had problems with my car when I switched to OBDII but when it was a 95 ecm I went from the same gear ratio to the 3.33 and had no issues... I have since modified my bin with DHP to correct for the gear change.

Get both Trans ID's and I can give you more solid info, this is guessing by body style. Tag is on the passenger side tail shaft, near the diff.
