I have a 93 grand prix and it has the 3.1L. My tranny will slip if the tranny is cold or if its bean sitting for more than an hour. If I drive the car like this the tranny will slip for maybe 3 seconds then the car will be fine. I have bean driving the car like this for three years and I've put 20,000 miles on the car since I have first bought it. Their is also a faint gear sound that comes from the tranny the sound will go up and down with the engine revs if the car is in nurtal but in drive the sound will increase with speed then when it shifts into second gear the sound will increase again and then once it goes into third gear the sound will decrease the then in four gear the sound can not be heard. I think its my pump thats going bad but I don't know to much about transmissions. I have also bean changing the fluid and filter every year and their was never any metal in the pain thier was a very small amount of clutch materal on the magnet but I have bean told that ths is normal for an old car. I don't have allot of money to spend so should I continue to drive the car like this or should I just get another car. The engne and tranny bolth have 163,000 miles the car is in mint condition inside and out everything works even the A/C. would it be worth it to get the tranny rebuilt and about how much would it cost me?.

I have bean reading other threads on trannys and I wonder if I can adjust the vacuum modulator for my tranny? Its the original so I don't know If I can adjust it.If I can adjust it then where is the adjustment screw?. Also I have recently discovered that I had a very bad vacuum leak going to the modulater. All of the soft vacum lines where all dry rotted so I replaced all of them. The little filter thing was aslo clogged so I just by passed it because I cant find a new one. I also checked all the other vacum lines as well. the end result is that may brakes and my cruise control work much better now but the tranny still slips when its bean sitting for an hour when hot or when its cold. Also If I let the car sit for a couple of seconds like maybe 10 or 15 sec the car will also be fine. I don't like to drive the car when the tranny slips so I just let it idle and then drive. I can still beat on the car it will go into passing gear with out hesitation and it does not take much peddal movnet for the car to go into passing gear.

Judging by your mileage, I'd like to think your transmission was rebuilt at one point. They might've replaced the Drive Chain which would cause the whine you are hearing. Not a problem. The slipping be due to missassaebly...or some seal shrank.... an adjustable vaccum modulator might help, kicking up the internal pressure just enought to stop the sliping.Lorenzo
