  • '95 4t60e vs '96 4t60e

    Car: 1996 Buick Regal Custom
    Engine: 3100 V6
    Transmission: 4t60e

I just found out I needed to do a transmission swap because my 60e is starting to go, so I bought a 4t60e out of a 1995 Buick Century. Are these two transmissions compatible? Would it be a bad idea to put the '95 transmission into a '96 car?
I can't imagine them being much different, judging as how they have the same name and everything.

This is a recent thread. It should be the same.

That thread is kind of a mess.
From what I read, the only difference on those two transmissions is the safety switch on the top of the tranny?
Does that bolt on and off?

the park/nuetral switch is different cause one trans is OBD 1.5 and the other one is OBD 2. just swap over your current one.

a fun fact: They are the same switch, except they have different connectors. The newer switch costs less, partly because the old switch had its own length of wires, about 6" while the newer ones don't. OBD2 computers run different signals to the switch, but they're still "interchangeable" if you rewire the plugs. I actually have both sets of plugs in my OBD2 harness, because initially I used the stock '95 switch.

good point... but yes your right you can use either if you rewire it, but why bother, just use the switch that comes off of your current trans.

Its referred to as the P/N safety switch and range slector.

Also to add to this large mess of confusion... a 96 4t60e, has some better parts in it over the 95, Low input sprag for one that I know of...

So, is this a painful and time consuming process? Or is it basically unplugging old stuff, plugging in new..?

Did '96 tranny's get the hardened steel reverse reaction drum? Cause that's what I blew last time, and it was a '94 or 95 trans. I'm waiting for this one to go too. So far it shifts nice, but so did the last one, lol.

I KNOW a 99 has one, I'm not sure when they started though.

the 3rd pic is the speed sensor. the 2nd pic the thing with the wires coming off of it is the actual park/nuetral switch.
