  • Which stall speed?

    Hey all,
got a 94 Z24 3.1 with light mods. i plan on doing a 4T65E 3.69 FDR LSD swap. plan on keeping this tranny for a long time. what stall should i get. my current stall is 2500 rpm. future build will involve something with a lopy idle, but not for 3 years or so. want the right converter for the build in the future--cheaper. but then again, when i do build the engine......the converter will be right there. so not so hard to replace. pulls really hard from 2500-4000 rpm. stay stock for now?

for now, stay with stock. gm built a 3000 stall converter for a 4 cyl th125, it will drop right into your 4t65e. if i could remember what exactly it was out of, you could look through the junkyards and find one.

i know it's my toy, but still looking for the best mileage i can get. why not get a 2800 stall? i'd rather have new, not a junkyard persuasion. don't want shudder after all that work.

If I remember correctly, I think the 3000 stall was behind the Pontiac 2.0L OHC engine only, not the OHV engines that also were featured in the J-Bodys. But I could be wrong.

imo, stay stock for now, when you build that motor up, talk to a pro about getting a custom built tq to your spec, he'll ask you a few questions and youll get what you want.

you will hardly notice the 3k gm stall from what your running now.
and if you go custom, make sure you get a TCC lockup tq, there so much nicer with the low gearing
i have 3.73 fdr and i must say im glad i have OD and tcc lock up...
          Drive sounds like second gear

if i have the 3.69 FDR and get the 225/50 R15's, that will increase my overall FDR to 3.81. my tire size stock is 24.7 inches in diameter, where the other size is 23.9 or 3.35% smaller. either case, it will be like a good head and cam swap and pretty sure it won't hurt my mileage at all!
