  • Change Over: 125C to 440-T4

Can 440-T4 be installed where a 125C is now...piece of cake?

In short, the 85 Ciera has a shot 125C, and I was thinking about getting a 440-T4 tranny.

    thx

your lucky, the ciera did have a 440t4 in them, so all you would have to do is find a parts car in the junkyard. you will need the tranny, axles, mounts, shifter, cables, dipstick and tube, support bracket from passenger side of motor/trans. it will all bolt right in. you may have some issues with wiring lockup in, ill see what i can figure out for you

now if you were trying to put a 440t4 in something like a j-body that never had one, that would be a tricky swap.

Many thanks...this is one of those "what if" questions...the 125C tranny is blown in this project car I'm starting to work on...so, my eyes are open for either repairing it, or looking for a 4 speed auto setup.

thanks...I'll have to look for a parts vehicle...

If you have a floor shift, you don't need to change the shifter, just the indicator. There's no difference between the two in an a-body. The cable may even be the same, not sure if I have ever checked.
The lockup connector shouldn't be an issue, as long as it's the square connector, not the 5pin round one. I put an '88 440t4 in my '86 and the wiring was a little different. I had to modify the connector a little so it could plug in (it was very easy to do because the plastic was old and brittle). It works perfectly even though there was a difference in the wiring. There also may be a difference in the prom? My car was a 440t4 to begin with.

I also used an '88 tranny because I was told that, by then, they were stronger than the earlier models.

I checked with automotive-parts store on CV-Shafts...there are differences here...so if the length's are the same, along with mounting being the same, then it might work.

I am speaking of mechanical transmissions...not electronic ones....

I found a tranny in a near by state, but I will be passing on it since the CV-Shafts are different, and he does not have the shafts that came with it.

Of course, if you can switch out the cradle between vehicles, then it should work...if you can hook up everything OK....
