  • The G6 tranny?

OK, I've heard more than a few times that the G6 6 speed tranny *could* work with out motors, but I've never been able to get any definative info. So whats the skinny? Is it possible, in theory, to take a 6 speed and mate it to my old 2.8? Obviously the mounts would be an issue, but thats where fabricating gets fun. But my main concern is will the tranny be a straight bolt up or will an adapter plate be needed? And what about the clutch? Which should be used?
Tuning a car is full of compromises. You must decide if you are willing to give up either reliability, performance, or a whole load of cash. Also remember that repairs will seem to come up much more often as you strive for even more performance

Considering the G6 that gets the above tranny is available with either a 4T65E or the 6-spd manual, then I would say that yes it will bolt up.

As another option, there is always the new 6-spd auto for 2008...

Damn, that's a goofy lookin' unit. Looks like it might not fit in smaller engine compartments.

OK, I am interested in the stick shifter. Any info on the power capacities of this engine? Also, what about this axles? Will the stock citation axles work?
One more question, what the hell are those electrical conectors for?

i was able to get a brand new 6 speed from a supplier for $250. i looked at the cost of the swap and i figured over $2g. here's why

-clutch, the g6 uses a dual mass flywheel, about 11/16" thicker than our gen 1 or 2 flywheels. thiw means run the dual mass flywheel (big bucks from gm) or get a custom flywheel. if you run the dual mass clutch setup, no problem off the shelf stuff. if you get a custom flywheel you can run a 282 pressure plate and use a ford ranger 3.0l clutch disk (same splines).

-axles, this is a huge issue. the g6 axles not close to anything gm. they different length and spline. complicating it, gm went away from their 2 axle shaft diameters, meaning swapping the joint and cup onto a different axle isnt possible. a guy with a fiero got a rear end shop (strange engeneering is comming to mind) to design an adaptor shaft to use 125 automatic female axle cups. they are around $350, can get the build number from the guy on pennocks.

shift cables and shifter- all has to be g6 stuff, i couldnt find anything else to work. either find one in the junkyard or buck up from gm.

-mount- it uses a rear mount setup to the subframe, not a very hard thing to build. im sure using a stock g6 mount you could build a purch for it on any subframe.

not an easy swap. i figured out what i would get out of it in performanc ewould get eaten up by the extra weight of it, and the fuel economy wopuldnt be that much better being my car wont cruise at 1900rpm (as gm claims, 1900rpm at 100kmh or 60mph) because of the cam.

            It's rated for 300 ftlbs.

The gearing is atrocious. It has a WIDER RPM drop from 1-2 than the 282 does, despite being a "close ratio" 6 speed. What a load of shit.
            Current:
\'87 Fiero GT: 12.86@106 - too dam many valves; ran 12.94 @ 112 on new engine, then broke a CV joint
\'88 Fiero Formula: slow and attention getting; LZ8 followed by LLT power forthcoming
\'88 BMW 325iX: The penultimate driving machine awaiting a heart transplant

            Gone, mostly forgotten:
\'90 Pontiac 6000 SE AWD: slow but invisible

Sent you a PM, actually the G6 axles should work fine on the wider track front wheel drive cars. The axle spline # is odd and uncommon at 33 but the bearings, cage and cup are the same as earlier outboard joints in these cars so you disassemble the outboard joint and swap the cup that fits your hub on to the G6 outboard joint internals.

The Cobalt SS and Satrun Redline models use the F35 MU3 5 speed also from Sweden used in the Saab like the F40 and its axles are interchangeable across these two transmissions, the major difference being the intermediate shaft which has the bolt pattern for the Ecotec and the axles are a little bit shorter than the G6 axles so for cars with a track a little bit wider than the Fieros one of these sets of axles should work.

As for all of the other parts needed, I have 2 G6 flywheel and clutch sets, 2 G6 shifters and a set of shift cables up for sale on Ebay along with a steel crank a complete 3500 V6 with 7x ring and turbo grind camshaft etc but no one seems to want to buy them since my post in buy sell trade didn't spark much interest. Oh well I guess I'll have to borrow from my mom to finish my 3.9 swap.
