  • 65 HD in a Z34

besides a 97 and harness.... what would it take to get a trany from my 98 GTP to work in my 96Z34... the 97 Z34 came with the 4t65e.... being that the gtp is a 4t65-hd.
-the trany will deff bolt up.
-controling the trany can be done with the 97 PCM and harness.

issues i can think of are:
    - incompatable TQ converters?
    - needing diff axles (posible to make a hybrid of my current axles and the gtp's)
-gearing diff gtp is 2.92 and my Z is 3.43 IIRC

the gearing i can deal with. can always try and swap gearing? even go for higher gear...

    ok time for ideas....

as long as you have the 97 3.4 tdc wiring harness and computer, it shouldnt be too bad. the tranny will bolt up, torque converter will bolt up. the hd uses bigger axles, however being both w bodies they should be swapable, or at the very most have to change wheel hubs to make them fit.

there is some varience in 4t65 gearing, however the HD uses a different diff from the non HD, so that may limit your choices unless you get into swapping the chain sprockets.

Also, the final drive for the 65 will REALLY SUCK in your car. The 4t60-E is like 3.33, or 3.43 and can be made to 3.73, but most of the 4T65-E is 2.86.

the 4t60e can range 2.84 to 373 depending on the application. the 4t65e is used in a wide variety of applications from the 3400 mini vans to the 5.3l grand prix. there are more gear ratios out there than just the 2.86. heck, if you wanted you could by the race 4:1 differential from gm for the race 4t65e.

I was thinking about doing this, but I'm a little scared of the wiring changes I may need... Do you think it would be possible for me to just add in the part I need?? and leave the rest the same?

Only issue I see is a 97 Z34 was a DOHC motor... I would need a 3x00/4t65e ECM and bin combo... wich may push me up into the 98 realm which then I think I need to do major rewiring...

          Damn...

Then just turn all the tranny stuff off in the PCM...

I heard that L67 swapped montes DID need a hybrid Monte/Grand Prix Axel. I remember because someone asked the same question for an L67 and Milzy chimed in that he could do them, and he'll them to him. I was like "bastard."

This is why I believe that.

Axle, gearing, harness and ECU are the big ones.
