  • 4T60-E mount bracket differences (HELP!!!!!)

okay. I might have found a snag in my OBD2 swap. I did a search and couldn't find anything to help so hopefully someone will know and I am not the first that is going to encounter this.

Sorry this is so long, but I want to get as much information in here that I can.

Also, all of this is in my 1988 Cutlass Supreme that I had originally did a 3100/4T60-E swap, and I am not converting the computer system to OBD2.

I am swapping out the 1993 4T60-E in my 1988 Cutlass Supreme. The original 440-T4 had the big tranny bracket (top of tranny, not rear mount). It had the one with the 2 bolts on top, and the 2 bolts in the front.

When I put in the 4T60-E, I used the bracket that came with it. The tubular one with one bolt on the top, 2 in the front, and 2 in the back.

I am doing an OBD2 swap, so I am replacing the 1993 4T60-E with a 1996 4T60-E and it has the bracket attached to the side pan. Instead of the stamped steel side pan, it has the aluminum pan with the bracket attached too it.

I reused the tranny mount that I had with the 1993 tranny (and everything bolted up fine to my 1988 subframe), but it did not want to line up. I compared the SUBFRAME BRACKET in my 1988 to the one in my parts car (1996 Grand Prix SE), and they are DIFFERENT. I finally got the tranny to bolt up to the 1993 mount, and 1988 subframe, but it took me a lot more fighting than when I did the original setup.

My qusetion is this. Is the SUBFRAME BRACKET different and should I use it? Or will it be fine to use the 1988 subframe bracket with the aluminum pan? I got it in, and it SEEMS to be fine, but I want to be certain that it is not going to be twisted later on and cause problem. I would rather deal with this now, than later.

Since it looks okay, am I good to keep it the way it is, and then just deal with it later if it is causing a twist? I tried to eyeball it, but I am not 100% sure of what I am seeing. The brackets are a LOT different, but without swapping it out, I can't be 100% sure. They look like they have the mount in the same spot, but once again, without swapping it out, I can't be 100% sure.

I will swap out the bracket if I need too. I am just hopeing someone else has encountered this and knows for a fact to save me from swapping this out if it is not needed.

Larry might be able to help with this, I remember him babbling about transmission brackets when he did the 4T60-E rebuild on the white car. If you had to move the transmission to line up the bolts it is probably the wrong bracket. If it bolts into an aluminum pan is it cast or drawn sheet metal? If it is cast like the oil pan (rough finish like the valve covers) it has about 30% lower strenght than sheet metal. If they are boss extrusions from the casting (they stick out) the could break off over time. It really depends on how much you had to preload the mount to get it to line up. Are the transmission mounts the same? That might be the problem as well? Good luck man.

Well if you are having a hard time geting everything to hook up you should use the cooresponding bracket off the frame. I know its a bitch but Ken is right you are going to break somthing if you start canking down bolts. Some things are the same some aren't...

yeah. It is not that hard to change out with the engine in the car. I think I am going to go ahead and get the engine in there, then I will just swap the bracket out.

Now that I think about it, I remember that the tranny was sitting kinda HIGH in there.

Once the engine is in, I will pull the old bracket and swap them out.
