  • seating the throwout bearing on a 284

i got my tranny back in and the throwout bearing isnt locking into the pressure plate correctly. i pushed on the fork and it snapped in and was working fine, but it backed out again and i cant get it to snap back in. im thinking i just need to get a new clutch since i cant get just the pressure plate. was going to save up for a fidanza and centerforce clutch, but im just going to get a decent cheap one like zoom or luk. do you think im stuck buying a new clutch or is there a suggestion of how to get the bearing to lock onto the plate?

iirc there is a snapring on the presure plate. if u have the right little tool, you can expand the ring and seat the bearing.

also for me i just put mine on the fork and pushed the clutch in and it seated by itself. by physically seating the bearing like that, how would u get it into the fork?

it sounds like the snap ring on the pressure plate is worn out, however how does the TO bearing look? worn at all?

yeah, the snap ring's worn out. it completely popped off after i messed with it some more, so im just going to have to replace the clutch this weekend. i figured it would seat by itself, but i had to seat it with a prybar. clutch worked right after i did that (heard it snap in), but then when i tried to move the car later, it wouldnt go into gear anymore. only place i could find just the throwout bearing was centerforce, but it was 250, so im just going to spend 150 on a whole new one. apparantly, its not good to have to seat the bearing more than once. i think i did put some pressure on it and messed it up when i pulled the tranny, though. thanks for the input. hopefully, i wont have to pull the tranny again. thanks for the input. cant wait to get this thing going again.

i actually just need the bearing, but thanks anyway, so its either 250 for that or 150 for a new complete set. its "perfection", but its made by the same company as zoom, which are decent. other a/m clutches (beck/arnley, etc.) cost more than the centerforce one!! LuK doesnt make one for the 284, so perfection it is. oh, well, if this new one goes bad, it has a "lifetime" warranty and i have an extra friction plate in decent shape and this will be the third time ive had the tranny out, so i should be good at it by now, lol.

i think i have a spare TO bearing, i'll check it out, but it is used, and still attached to the old pressure plate. if you are intrested let me know, i don't see myself ever using it.

                WHAT?!?

if he declines, i want that t/o bearing for sure. i am not too keen on paying 180 at advance for a clutch kit just for a damn bearing.

hey pwmin, clutchnet makes 284 parts but like every1 else you only get a t/o in a kit. kinda pricey but good stuff so far. clutches are beefy and also they are the only company i know of to make a 2x pressure plate for the 284.

many thanks for the offer, but i really dont feel like possibly having to pull this again, lol, so im just going to use the whole kit. its all yours, fiend.

i only paid 150 at advance for my kit :P (dad has a level 3? commercial account). still...sux no one sells the damn t/o separate.

ive looked at the clutchnet site, but i had a hard time finding anything. they dont even list grand prix anywhere that i can find. guess id have to fill out the custom parts form? and, by 284 parts, you mean just clutch parts or more?

ya just clutch and pressure plate. their 284 clutch and plate is actually listed under the lumina iirc.

also you can use a neutrally balanced 282 flywheel in a 284 so you can find aluminum flywheels too. but again they can be pricey.

yep, its under lumina 3.4...found it. $250 for a regular or 2X plate. i think ill get the 282 fidanza flywheel and that one or the centerforce one when i get everything else done and get some money. should be able to replace the clutch tomorrow night and hopefully get the thing going again.

finally got it working. replaced the clutch w/ a new set last night. only took me about an hour to pull the trans this time. at first, it went into gear, then it wouldnt and im like oh, fvck, but then i got it to seat and ive been driving it for a while no problems. it doesnt shudder anymore either when im in too high of a gear after coming out of a corner or something. not sure if that was the trashed front motor mount or the one bolt i asked about i another post being loose. i had a set of NGX iridium plugs in the stock heat range that i was going to put in instead of the 12s but it seems fine now, so ima just leave them in. just had to replace one of the NGKs that was cracked.
