  • 284 diagnostic question.

my 284 works good and all but after it gets warm and i come to a stop i can hear what sounds like bearing chatter. not very loud persea but if it is quiet or i get out of the car i can hear it.

it goes away when i push the clutch in. the T/O in it looked like crap but it came with an extra T/O bearing that looked good so i popped it in at some point but no success.

i am attempting to acquire another T/O bearing but it seems the only way to get one is to buy a clutch kit.

but if the T/O doesn't cure it, what could the cluprit be?

other info: i only run gm synchromesh in it, should i try to mix something a little heavier in there with the synchromesh perhaps?

what will happen if this goes unchecked?

    any help is appreciated. thx.

is this a clutch in or clutch out noise??? with the clutch in, it usualy points to t/o bearing. if its clutch out in neutral, then its likley input bearing, but could also be any of the other bearings on the input/counter shafts.

i guess u could say it makes the noise in "clutch out" and goes away during "clutch in".

just to clarify, clutch in means when you have your foot on the clutch, clutch out is when your foot is off the clutch.

if its a clutch out noise its likly bearings in the tranny.

correct, how long do you think i have since nobody can repair this tranny. i take it when they go the entire tranny will seize at some point then?

ill tell you what i tell customers at work when they ask how long it will last, if i could tell you that id be making millions telling the future. its impossible to tell, but i can tell you it will end up getting louder and louder, it will likly take the front seal out and start pouring all the oil out. it wont seize up on you.

yeah, nobody makes a t/o that they sell separate besides centerforce (pn: 900, $250). i use amsoil synchromesh, but its a 5W30 oil and isnt any heavier than the gm synchromesh that i know of. not sure i would try to use anything else. for sure, you can tear the tranny apart and put it back together, but they arent serviceable. took 4 days for me to get the axle seals from gm, but they are discontinued and i dont know how many are left in the system. i found seals made for another tranny that worked and i had them already, so i just used them instead of waiting for the gm ones. anyway, i digress. when i put my t/o bearing in wrong, it made noise w/ the clutch out.

i wouldnt worry about it too much. if it goes bad, you can build a 282 to hold up pretty well or try swapping the MT2.

ya i was thinking that myself. i'll probably try to find the same gears as the 284 or maybe just a tick more aggressive gears for the if/when the time comes.

hey i hear the 282's are 50lbs lighter too. my flywheel will swap but unfortunately if the 284 dies it will render my stage 3 clutch and 2x plate useless .
