  • no OD when shes warm

hey people i have 2 questions. first off how come when my '95 z26 beretta 3.1L warms up she wont shift into overdrive. now maybe my secound question ties into the first. in the two pictures i sent the one is a pic of the driver side between the strut tower and hood hinge. there is a white almost "U" shaped vacc. line not hooked up to nothing but the tranny. and in the second pic about dead center u will see a rubber hose going into the top of my tranny. its inbetween the wire harness and the shift linkage. this hose is not hooked up to diddly squat. now would this have anything to do w/ the shift prob? and where should i hook this U shaped line to since i dont see a readily available vacc connection. is it possiable that this motor has been changed?

    Thank You!!!

    Respectfully,
    Phil

that is your breather hose. the line out of the top of the case hooks to the u-shaped peice. this is designed so that debris doesnt get into the breather and plug it off. dont hook it to anything, its not meant to go anywere.

loss of overdrive when hot can be caused by worn out seals inside the tranny . when parts expand, they no longer allow the seal to fully seat against the parts and allow oil to leak passed. another thing that could cause this would be a worn out valve body. bottom line, the tranny would need to come out of the car and be overhauled.

You sure its not going into overdrive? maybe it's not gonig into lock up. Shift pattern in 1,2,3, lockup, 4 on acceleration.

The rubber hose goes to the bottom of the metal U tube thing. You could try a $6 bottle of GM automatic seal conditioner from the dealership to swell the seals. It fixed my problems but they were when it was cold not hot.

Thats not the shift pattern... Its 1-4 then lock up once a steady TP is obtained.

90% of the time you will NOT feel 4th gear on a stock 4t60e, you'll fell the converter lockup before you ever feel that gear. So it could just not be going into torque lock, and that is a more common issue than loosing 4th gear.

This is a result of a worn valve body and side loading valves... They are made from a soft aluminum and so is the body so when they wear out they get stuck together. Newer models have steel valves and they also coat the aluminum ones with a hardcoat of some sort to prevent side loading.

Sonnax sells these coated valves to put into older transmissions, but the newer ones already come with them. I found that out when I rebuilt a 99 for my friends Z, that I'm swapping on the 28th.

Odds are the trans needs an overhaul and the transgo shift correction kit applied to it.

the 4t60e shift pattern verries depending on the application. some shift 1-2-3-4-lockup, some shift 1-2-3-lockup-4, the 3.4l dohc even shifts 1-2-4-lockup under light throttle.

yeah I dont know the pattern for transmissions '94 and later but '93 down 4th comes in last. At least thats what my 3.4 TDC used to do..not to mention I saw the program. when you have that huge drop in tach that isn't the converter kicking in. thats 4th. Better yet when you try to accelerate and the tach doesnt respond like it normaly does in the lower gears (except for the new new cars) thats the TCC engauged. You are connected to the engine completely.

I have a 94 Olds Ciera w/ 4t60e with the same problem. It doesnt lock up when it gets hot (not warm) the car is too old for me to worry about it though. When I got the car the trans was slipping and shifting funny all the time. I did a home style trans flush where I dumped a little of the fluid out of the cooler line at a time and replenished it with dexron until it looked clean, then i dumped 4 more quarts out and added some redline d4 ( i swear by this stuff for old trannys ) and it feels great now except the lockup prob.
