well im gonna tear apart my tranny tomorrow to find out what the damage is (in the CL... v6 getrag).

i also have a 90 quad4 tranny (4banger getrag), can i use parts from that? would it just be easier to put that tranny in?

4 cylinder and V6 bellhousings are different, and will not interchange.

I seem to be thinking that the 2 different getrags had different gearing, so I don't think it would be a good idea to mix and match parts.

I wanna say the 4 banger getrag was geared more like the 3.4 DOHC getrag, than the 3.1 getrag.

Also, you can't get parts for the getrag282, but you can use parts for the MUNCIE 282. Same tranny, basically. A getrag tranny can only be serviced my getrag gears of north america.

yeah the gears are a lil shorter, and i know the bell housing would have to be swaped, but would it be hard? i just want something quick to get by for now (i want to rebuild one and get all the gears cyro treated with an LSD)

The 3.4 DOHC transmission is the 284. The Muncie 282 and Getrag 282 are one and the same since that trans was a Getrag design that GM bought and produced in the Muncie plant.

Some Q4 transmissions have different gearing and some don't. It depends on the year and whether it was the HO (180 hp) or the super HO (195).

I think the '90 Q4 transmissions have a shorter 2nd and 4th than the V6 boxes, but the same 1st, 3rd, 5th and final. The later Q4 boxes got the 3.94 final.

the quad 4 getrag was behind the 180hp quad 4 HO, and the 195hp quad 4 w41. the gearing in the q4ho varried by year. here is the gearing for the 90 quad 4

            1st 3.50
            2nd 2.19
            3rd 1.38
            4th 1.03
            5th 0.81
            Axle 3.61

            and the v6 j/l/n body

            1st 3.50
            2nd 2.05
            3rd 1.38
            4th 0.94
            5th 0.72
            Axle 3.61

so comparing, 2nd, 4th and 5th gear is gonna be a litle shorter. this isnt the best ccombo for fuel mialage. if you cruise on the highway a fair bit, it would be worth it to salvage 5th gear from youre v6 tranny. it is a direct swap over.
