Can I put a 1995 grand prix 4t60e into a 1996 grand prix? My transmission just went out and my brother is ripping his out of his 95 within two weeks and he offered it to me, so we want to know if it will work in my 96, or if there is something we have to do for it to work. Thanks

It should. One thing that might be an issue could be gearing, depending on which engine was in the car. Your engine choices are a 3100 (most likely) or a 3.4 DOHC V6.\"NASCAR is an integral part of my life. A part of me died when Dale Earnhardt died.\"

1999 Chevrolet Lumina 3100 - Wife took it at 158,340 miles

Different computers shouldn't matter. Best bet would be to find wiring diagrams for both cars and verify the tranny wiring is the same. It should be, as most of the changes in electronics, from what I have seen, happened between 93-95. You may also be able to do a search on car-part.com to see if they are interchangable.
For wiring diagrams, www.alldatadiy.com is usually the best source, although it'll cost you $35 to get 1-yr subscriptions for both cars. But at least you'll basically have a GM Service Manual for your use for the next year for both cars.-Brad-

If the 95 car isnt OBDII you will have to swap a couple sensors over on the tranny but i shouldnt be a problem.
I put a 96 Grand Am 4t60-e into my 95 Beretta Z26 and had to swap over a couple sensors and should have swapped over the gear for the VSS. Something about needing a 29 tooth instead of the 31 or whatever came with the GA tranny. My speedometer is off. At the time I didnt care enough to crack open the case. Not sure if thats an OBDII change or just a difference between the vehicle models that caused that issue for me. Just something to be aware of.
Other than that I had no issues, so you should be fine.

95 to 96 grand prix, nothing has to be changed.
The ONLY sensor you would EVER have to swap and is probably vehicle specific would be the tone ring pickup speed sensor, and thats ONLY if the harness plug differs, which I think they do not untill you get into the newer years.
you wont have to touch your tone ring though since its the same car type.
Other than that there is no OBDI to OBDII differences... For example I'm running a 94 trans on my OBDII swapped Beretta.

there IS one difference, and that's the gear indicator/ safety switch on top of the tranny. Just transfer it over. I have a '97 tranny in my '95 that was the only difference.Brian
