  • Changing Transmission

I have a 1999 Olds Alero GLS Coupe with the 3400/4t45-e. The transmission is on its last legs and needs to be replaced. I have a 4t45-e which came from a 2000 GAGT 3400 w/Ram Air. If I'm correct, the Alero had a 3.05:1 FDR and the GAGT had a 3.29:1 FDR, although both apparently have the same gearing in all 5 gears (4 + Reverse), which I don't fully understand. If I swap these transmissions, will there be a problem? I don't know if this will cause any confilicts with the computer, speedo, etc.

if the final drive ratio is different the computer would require changes or it will set gear ratio error codes and it will end up in failsafe (2nd gear only). if you have a programer, you should be able to take care of this.

So DHP should be able to handle the changes I need to make then? I was looking at DHP anyway for when I rebuild the spare 3400 I have. The consensus seems to be DHP is the best option from what I've read.

DHP is the best, and ull prob want to change shift points with the different FDR. i would look closely though, because you can get better gearing than the 3.05 and 3.29...there are
3.91, 3.63,3.69, and 3.42 all using the 3.05 diff or the 3.29 diff. the only thing to change is the ring gear, sun gear and input shaft sensor along with the FDR in the computer. im going to use 3.91 gears and see how i like it
