  • Manual Transmission question/problems Getrag 284

For all those familiar with a 284, I'm having a little problem with mine. When it sits for any time, say over night, the clutch system looses all hydraulics. After pumping it about 30 - 40 times, it will work again and is drivable.

Sounds like a small leak to me, I have looked over everything real good, and the only part with any fluid on it is the (i dont know what these parts are called) part right before the actuator that bolts to the transmission. The manual calls it the "canister". Is this thing the slave cylinder? I can't find where its leaking at, but it has fluid all over it (not a whole lot, but it has eaten the paint off), and down the hydraulic tube to the actuator.

Any comments or help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

That round thing is the accumulator, I guss it is possible for it to spring a leak. That is what it sounds like too, a leak or possibly air in the system.

The slave cylinder is the part that bolts to the transmission.

When my car is cold, overnight freezing, I can't move the shifter side to side. Only 1st and 2nd work. But once the cabin warms up, it works fine.. Only did this since the rebuild. Oh well, I got over it.

Probably twisted your cables some, I did the same thing on mine.

The end of the hose piece is the slave cylinder, it is attached to the accumulator by about 4-6" of hose, the accumulator is connected to the master cylinder by 24" or so of hose.

so the real question is are you going to try and find a used slave or get a new one???

Check the line that goes into the Master slave. I might need a need Master soon since the last time I checked the pipe it had a spot that was almost worn thru.

I had the exact thing happen to mine, and it turned out that the base of the accumulator was leaking and so was the lock pin joint.

I took the slave out and found to amazement that the rod bushing was bad and the retainers were gone!!! That explained the hard shifting in all gears. The slave had a lot of side play even when rebuilt with a decent used retainer and bushing so I got a new one.

It good to get some lube under there I spray WD-40 occasionally to inhibit rust on the links and bracket.
              I am back

Did you end up getting a new accumulator? If you did, where did you get it from?
