  • Chugging and Sputting when at a stop light.

When at a stop light the engine wants to sputter and chug with the brakes applied - the transmission is in "D". When I put the selector into neutral the engine returns to normal.

I was planning on getting the tranny flushed to solve the problem but I just want to be sure it's something minor rather than something complex and expensive. Anybody have any ideas?

Sounds like perhaps the TCC solenoid isn't dis-engaging.

im going to asume this is the 95 corsica, wich has a 4t60e and is not known for lockup problems.

what you are describing is not a lockup problem, if it was lockup the car would stall right out when you came to a stop. from your description, i would say its an engine related problem, likley a vacuume leak.

agree, I was thinkin more along the lines of a partially stuck open EGR or a sticking IAC

just today I was backing up and when I put it into drive the car stalled. it did that a few months back when I first got it. i changed the engine oil yesterday and some of the sputting has gone away. it's not a severe but it still occurs but it takes longer when at a stop light. the car is also hesistant when you first start it and try to take off.

changing your oil or trans fluid is not going to fix anything. is your check engine light on?

try unpluging the lockup converter if that dosent help just plug it back in no $$$ involved

you cant unplug just the lockup clutch. the lockup wiring is in the same plug as the rest of the solonoids, if its unplugged it will be stuck in 2nd gear and wont shift.

I didn't figure changing the oil would solve it at all but it was worth a shot. The tranny hasn't been flushed yet either. I now notice that when I try to take off from a stop light, the engine is really hesitant to rev even though the throttle is open to approx. 50%. It will eventually kick in after a second or two but it's not normal. I don't think at this point that it could be solely the fault of the transmission.

I recently ran some fuel injector cleaning through it in hope of clearing out some of the gum but I haven't seen a major different. One thing that I haven't checked is the spark plugs. The wires were new when I got the car but I have not yet checked/changed the plugs. The ones on the back bank of cylinders are going to be a real P.I.T.A. to change from looking at it.

Look for a vacum leak. I see it all the time at work (AutoZone). Classic symptoms.

Like trying to find a needle in a haystack under all the wiring and cables but I will take some ether and find the leak if there is one.

I would say take it to autozone and have them check the codes hard to tell for sure with out hearing it run also might want to check timing

a 95 cavalier still uses a th125 (or 3t40) wich is hydralicly controlled, only thing electronic was lockup. gm used this tranny in the 2.2l j-bodies till 2002. those are possible to unplug lockup without any other issues.
