  • HM282 Question

    I'll be picking up my '94 HO Quad 4 tranny this week to swap out the bellhousing on and use with my cammed 3500. My original plan was to just use the whole thing but after doing some reading it seems as though it might be a bit much.

    here are the gear ratios...

    1st 3.50
    2nd 2.05
    3rd 1.38
    4th 1.03
    5th 0.72
    Axle 3.94

    and here are my stockers
    1st 3.50
    2nd 2.05
    3rd 1.38
    4th 0.94
    5th 0.72
    Axle 3.61

    According to DD2K the engine makes peak HP at 6500, cruse RPM is around 3K or so.

    What do you guys think...

    Swap over the 4th gear and use the stock 3.61 FDR
    Swap over the 3.94 FDR and leave the rest alone..
    Swap in the whole 83K mile tranny and deal with it.

    I'm not worried about gas mileage, this thing won't get better than 15 MPG or so anyways... Maybe 20 on the highway. It's intended purpose is to get down the track as fast as possible and it's not a daily driver. LOL

    Dave,

    If it were me, and I was looking for the fastest possible track times without worrying about fuel efficiency or cruise RPM (because as you said it isn't a daily driver anyhow) I'd go with the whole sha-bang and toss in the Quad 4 tranny. A cammed 3500 and more aggressive gear ratios....how can you go wrong?

    Either way, it's still gonna pull like a raped ape

          just incase you didnt know guys, you cant just swap gears.

          only 5th is pressed on, i know steve explained it to me, but there was a reason you cant just swap the 1-4 gears out individually.

          i really like my w41 gears + diff first is just stupid though you'll need slicks for the track and forget it on the street lol its only good for getting rolling.
          got zap-straps?

            gears 1-4 must be swapped in pairs. 1st and 2nd driven gears, as well as the final drive gear are built as part of the countershaft, and 3rd and 4th drive gears are built as parts of the input shaft. if you want to change a gear, you must change the shaft, and the coresponding gear must also be changed.

              well that's still no problem because everything is the same but 4th and the diff. so 3rd and 4th can be swapped b/c 3rd is the same, so no big deal there, and the diff obviously is it's own unit. if he just wants 4th....swap out the 3rd and 4th set........if just the FDR, swap the diff, if both, swap the bellhousing.....

              and FYI Dave's too lazy to go get it himself so he's having someone else do it for him

              Cammed 3400 --> 224whp 210wtq
              Cammed 3500 --> ???

                Unless you have a LSD, I would go with the 3.61 fdr. 1st gear is over in a blink of an eye with the 3.94, and I only have a mildly ported 3400. Also theres no reason why you cant get 30+mpg with a good tune, I was averaging 400-435 miles to a tank on my trip to florida. I know I dont have a cam, but I have the W41 gearset, which has the .81 5th gear.

                  I'm planning on getting in on the team green setup group buy on the .org.. i just gotta get the OK from the wife. Plus i'm assuming that i'll have to take the diff in to a shop to get it installed...

                    If you can take the diff out, you can install the insert.

                      well, the above mentioned trans was a bust.. turned out to be an isuzu.. even though it was tagged from a Q4 HO.

                      Found another one, gonna go check it out in the morning.
