  • 440T4 Converter Clutch durability

I'm so glad someone referred me to this forum! I've got a 1986 Buick Century with a modified 2.8 MPFI ironhead engine. Has 2-bar speed density ECM, 3.1 crank, custom turbo-intercooler setup, MSD ignition, and 440T4 transmission.
Anyway, I have gone round and round with the torque converter clutch. The turbo engine will stretch the 2100 RPM TC out to 3200 RPM. (probably higher but I got scared and let off the gas)
Originally the TCC clutch would slip easily under any boost at all. I ruined 2 converters this way. Then I modified the valving in the transmission to apply the TC with full line pressure. This has helped immensely. Now I can pull 5 PSI boost before the TCC slips. Plus this converter hasn't gotten so hot it turned blue.
Still I would like a TCC that can stay locked at full-power.
What do you recommend for a good 440T4 converter to go behind a daily-driven turbocharged 2.8?
The transmission has also the following modifications:
    3.33 final drive
    accumulator cover reinforcement
    2-plate 4th clutch
Any info or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    David

there are some converters built for high hp applications. have a look for aftermarket 4t65e hd converters. a 4t65e hd converter is compatable with the 440t4. i know there are some aftermarket ones for the l67 guys (oops, i used that 3 letter word), and there are some converters out there designed for he ecotec drag cars, but they are 5000k+ stall.

'Preciate that! I've found some promising-looking websites but I'm sure the businesses at the other end of those websites aren't open until Monday.
      Later,
