  • A word of Advice for my 60*v6 Brethren...(about brakes)

I bought some calipers (all four) from Autozone to replace the weatherbeaten calipers on the Euro ( I coated them in red). Plus the rear calipers now come with specially coated sliders (besides the grease) to help prevent slider seizure.

The new calipers came with new copper washers for the banjo bolt (the bolt that secures your brake line to the caliper). They appeared to be identical to the original, just without the grooves that are on the original.

DO NOT , I repeat, DO NOT use the washers that come with the caliper, they do not seal properly, and will allow brake fluid to seep past the banjo bolt. I found out the hard way. Monday night I bled all calipers plus the bleed screws at the master cylinder, and had a good pedal, or so I thought, so I cleaned up and called it a night.

When I went to leave for work, Tuesday morning, I had almost no pedal (thank goodness I was at the corner of my block). I crept back to my spot, and there was brake fluid all over the ground.

I changed back to the original washers last night, and all is well.

Did you tighten the fitting enough? Those washers are copper, and designed to be crushed the first time you tighten them. The old ones had grooves in them because the banjo fitting and caliper mating surfaces have grooves. When the fitting is tightened, it crushes the grooves into the copper washer.

DO NOT , I repeat, DO NOT re-use the old washers. If you install the new washers properly, they will work.

Did you remove both of the old washers? Everytime I have re-used old copper washers, they have not sealed. Again, if installed properly, the new washers will work.

I've sold probably hundreds of new W-Body calipers at work and never had a customer come back with that issue...

omg. I cannot believe you.... You weren't able to tell that those washers didn't fit. i put on new calipers last thursday and it was very easy to tell that the washers that it came with don't fit. The washers go on half way, but they don't go in all the way.l

Many times the washers are different sizes as well... So one may go all the way on, while the other will only fit the threaded portion.
