  • Stock Rim Question

I have changed tires for years and have heard of Magnesium rims being porous enough to let air out undetected. I have 3 out of 4 tires that go low in about 2 weeks. No signs of leaks on the tire or bead. Also, no "obvious" bubbles on the rim itself. Anyone ever experience this? I plan on powder coating the outside, maybe I'll spend the money and do the whole rim. (Except for the backside.) Please don't tell me to use "Fix-a-Flat". :P

leaky valve stem , tire not being put on the rim right happened to me. well at least the idiot who put my snow tires on didnt clean the inside of the rim off so the tire wasnt sealing correctly losing airlike crazy then it was leaky valve stems.

My Bad.. ALUMINUM ALLOY!!! Shit, I should kill myself... Don't know where that came from..( ) Anyone ever hear of "Fix-a-Flat"? Valve stems are cool, as are the beads. Soaped everything up for 1/2 hour, wheels off the car. Tires are new, for the most part. 10,000 miles on them. Goodyear TAs.

I wouldn't dare use fix-a-flat on tires you want to keep for a while. It's nasty stuff, throws off balancing, and it does eat away at the tire over a long period of time.

i changed the fluid and filter to the trainy and it works (kinda) again. i lost first gear though. it's ok though, i'll just whip a mustangs ass on the highway now!
Remember that outlet hose from the heater core to water pump I gave you? believe it or not, mine rusted through. it was a pinhole, and since it's so cold, i decided to patch it for now. I took the wheel off and pulled the dust cover off. used silcone - Let it dry, covered that with JB weld - Let it dry, then put metal tape all around it to triple protect it. hopefully that'll hold until it gets warm.
what are you doing to your car now? I saw the pictures, leslie asked me why your car looks so great? i need to fix my fender (the replacement is still in the basement), so i can post it. Oh yeah, and put a nice stainless steel muffler set on like you have. anyway, it looks great!

You know where it is, come get it if you need it. Back to the thread...I took the car to the tire shop last night. They could find no leaks either. Broke all the tires down and lubed the beads, installed new valve stems. Hasn't gone down yet, but it has only been one day.

A little note on the magnesium wheels. I've heard of them, don't know that I've ever seen any though. Ever wondered where the term "Mag Wheels" came from? I was talking to one of these "haz-mat" fire fighter guys once, who was telling me about "mag wheels". He told me how there has been several cases of guys with these wheels blowing tires on the highway. The rim drops to the pavement and starts sparking. This actually causes enough heat build up to start the Magnesium on fire. Burns the car down and melts the wheel right into the pavemwnt. You can't put that fire out with any normal fire extinguisher.

                          Kinda crazy stuff huh?

RednBlackCutlass, why do you think you have Mag Wheels? They're Cast Aluminum if their factory peices.
