  • Trying to figure out what is exactly making the noise

The last time I checked, I could tell one of my ball joints is toasted. I haven't got to get underneath my car recently, because all we have here is a ton of snow. But anyways, here's the problem. Whenever I turn, whatever way it is, it will make a nice clunk sound. I figure both of my balljoints need replaced, which is no big deal. But, is there really any way of telling if the CV Joints are in need of replacement as well? If the boot is good, is there anything I can do to tell if they are bad or not? Also, is there anything else that might be causing the clunking sound?

    Thanks.

The ball joints can make the clunk you're describing. However, I noticed in my Lumina, that the clunk existed even after I replaced the ball joint. And yes...the ball joint WAS bad. I'm looking at something in the strut area, either a strut itself, or a spring seat, or something of that nature.

Yeah, figured it was the ball joints. I had noticed in the fall, that the driver side ball joint surround was cracked, so I had assumed water was getting in there.

I'll be sure to check all the seats on everything when the ball joints are getting done.
