  • j body brake upgrade

im looking to upgrade my front brakes on my 86 z24 cavalier. now before i start, i already know there is the 92+ upgrade. i feel that going from 9.5"-10" is realy a waste of time and money, and the improvments will be marginal.

i was doing some looking and found that w body cars use 11" front brakes. i have done a lot of reasearch and it looks like the spindle will go on fine and wont be much hassle. i would need to use the w body hub as well being its 5x115 and the j body is 5x100 (i have dual bolt pattern 17" rims, so thats no big deal).

what im having trouble finding is info on the axles. are the outer axles the same as a j body (same diameter and spline count)??? this is the last thing i need before i got to get all of the parts from a donor car. and they arent the same, does anyone know if the w body outer can be used with the rest of the j body axle???

ive heard of someone using 11.25" from a cady seville, but the axles need to be custom. im not sure if its as simple as using the cady outer with the rest of the j body axle, or if it needs to be complete custom made.

My W body spindles look a lot taller, thicker and all around beefier than my L body spindles (I think L and J had the same spindles). The big difference I notice is that the springs and overall diameter of the W spindle is huge in comparison to the L. Um... sorry I dunno if the spline count is the same, I can tell you they use totally different hubs though.

The 92+ upgrade is probably the best bolt on/cost effective way to go. My 90 has new brakes all around (even new calipers up front) and it stops pretty good, can lock all 4 up but the pedal just feels like shit no matter how many times I bleed it. I just can't afford to dump the cash for the 92+ upgrade.

my brakes work well for normal driving, but ive had a few situations were i thought i was gonna rear end people because they just wont stop in a hurry if i need it to. mine also suffer from brake fade, and after a little bit of hard braking, they get smoking hot and realy smell. a couple buddies of mine have a 92 cavy and a 94 sunbird, and they are the same way. this is why i dont think a 92+ is the way to go. i can get everything for $100 canadian, but then i need to replace the rotors, pads, and calipers, making it closer to $350, and for only marginal better braking.

im not gonna cheap out here, this is a safty thing, but im also not willing to shell out $1000+ on an aftermarket setup.

theres a few people on beretta.net who have put on the 11" brakes, its a pretty beaten path now.
