  • Upper strut mount nut

So in the 92' GP, I need to figure a way to break that huge nut for the strut cartridge, so far i have tried a wrench and torques bit (completely sheared the bit) i have tried a ratchet and a pair of BRAND new vice grips and and the shaft still spins, I dont have access to an impact gun, so it seems like the only way to get around this is to go to a junk yard and get completely new strut assemblies, or are there other methods of breaking this bastard of a nut off of this without needing an impact gun?

If you aren't reusing the old strut, use the vicegrips and go in between the spring coils through the wheel well to hold the shaft still while you honk on the nut with a ratchet. At least, that's how I would go about it.

If you jack it up just enough to go between the coils you CAN get at the cap/nut that holds the strut in the lower housing... Removing that should let you pull the whole strut out the top.... Without having to remove the upper/rubber mount or that nut... Once it's out you can bring it somewhere with air-tools....
OR,,,, Try what Jon said but, use a pipe wrench... If you wrap some emory cloth around the shaft the wrench should grip enough to get that nut off.... The emory cloth will also protect the strut shaft from the wrench.....
      Good Luck,,,,,

I did try that, but the vice grip and pipe wrench failed me in the end, i ended up getting a hold of a buddy of mine and he called another buddy and was able to get me an electric impact gun to use. Made quick work of it

I don't really know much about these DIY fixes, so I'm sorry I can't be of much help. You could go directly to a mechanic and ask him about possible problems. Well, more often than not, all they do is offer you things like putting on a new pair of Monroe Car Strut Assembly Accessories that would "fix" the problem and get you drained of needless dollar expenses, but I listen to them anyways.
