  • Trooper Suspension Lift

Well last weekend I lifted my Trooper. Not a normal suspension thread for this board so I thought I would shake things up a bit. Cars get too much attention around here.

Front suspension after the lift. Not much looks different since the torsion bar crank is what gives the lift. Only the top ball joint has changed position. There are new droop bump stops, SS brake lines, ball joint spacers and shocks.

Here are the shackles I made. They are made from 3/8" x 1 1/2" stock with a 3/8" plate welded in the center for stiffness. The bolts are 12.9 grade M18 bolts drilled with a grease channel. They are also selected with a 3 1/2" shank so the bushings do not ride on any threads. They are machined to length. I also welded tabs on the side where the bolt head is so that they cannot turn and only require one wrench to tighten and loosen the nut.

Visible are the new springs, U-bolts, shocks and brake lines. The old spring plate was sand blasted and coated with POR 15. ARB makes some very top quality parts. I will use them for future projects. The U bolts fit the old spring plates absolutely perfectly. I have never had that happen with any U bolts I have bought. Even custom ones where the old bolts and plates were supplied for a match.

I will be installing a new 1 piece drive shaft to replace the old 2 piece shaft.

A lot of the newer Ranger guys do the T-bar crank to gain lift on the front. They also do the 1 piece drive shaft as well since I guess the 2 pieces are problematic. Nice work, and I think I have those same shocks on my truck, lol. When I had to replace my rear cab mounts and shackles/shackle mounts I sand blasted the frame on my truck, sprayed it with rust converter and coated with rubberized under-body coat.

Yea my friend has a 2009 Ranger 2WD and I noticed it had T-Bars up front. In the past 2WD models used Coils on I beams and then Coils on control arms didn't they?

Yeah, mine is coils on an I beam. I think it was around 98 or so when Ford switched from I beam syle (TIB or Twin I Beam for 2wd and TTB or Twin Traction Beam for 4x4) to the T bars. The 4x4's got it first, then a couple years later 2wd got it as well, making 2wd to 4x4 swapping much easier. Right now if I wanted to make mine 4x4 I have to either cut the old engine cross member out and spread the frame rails and wedge a 4x4 member in, or go SAS.

So it never had coils on control arms? interesting.

My friend has a 92 or 93 ranger with a 2.9L but he has swapped in a Dana 60 Rear and Dana 44 Front from an F250. Not street legal anymore but pretty sweet off road. He has a 4.0L to go in it soon.

Nope, no coils on control arms unless you remove the T-bars on the newer trucks and set up some coil overs like I've seen some do.
