  • 96 cutlass rear brake issues

hello sirs..having some probs with my cutlass rear brakes wearing out super prematurely. been back and forth to the dealer about once every other month for the rears..usually one pad is worn and the other has 50% wear left.

my question is..do they have some upgraded parts for these cars to fix this ongoing brake issue? and/or what are the best calipers/rotors/pads you can get that really last? the car is a daily driver. thanks!

I know my pads wear slightly uneven but not to bad.... you may want to check the park brake adjustment... could be causing one side to drag.. I run cheap parts store stuff..

Is the inside pad or the outside pad the warn out one? could be a sticky caliper or may need to clean and lube the slides... hard to say... Are both the rears doing this or is it just one side?

Earlier W's were notorious for rear brake problems. I would probably save some future headaches and go buy a set of new rear calipers that have the stainless steel slides. I would be shocked if the dealership hasn't already installed stainless slides, but you never know.

ok..so if i replace the calipers, will they come with stainless sliders? and i have heard that ceramic pads are the way to go..? for both front and rear..i want to tell the brake shop that i want stainless sliders and ceramic pads..this is crazy how many times i have had this car in for rear brakes!!

and, i guess the 96 cars have the upgraded(?) parts already??

oh, and btw, its the inside pass rear pad that is worn out...

I couldn't remember what year got the upgraded parts. Ceramic might eat your rotors faster, though. But yeah..

Classic symptom of a stuck caliper, either from a froze slide or piston, and since it's the inside pad I wouldn't be shocked if it's the piston.

I'd say a stuck caliper as well. Either the piston or the sliders.. FWIW: 96s did get the upgrade I believe. Bigger disc diameter and stainless slider pins.. I've found that the Permatex Slide lube works VERY good. When I used to use Never-Seize I found that that could actually make the sliders stick,,, the permatex really freed it up..
Surprised the dealer can't figure that out...
            Weird,,,

I tried the NAPA Ceramic pads on the front of my 99 Lumina and love them!!
