  • Question : Wobble on 93 Grand Prix GTP

I am looking at buying this 1993 Grand Prix GTP.

The body is in almost perfect condition, along with the paint. The engine bay is incredibly clean and the car was very well kept. The only two issues I have so far are these:

The front wheels have a pretty noticeable wobble at lower speeds. I wasn't able to take it for a real spin, the car isn't insured and it was dark out in an area I didn't know. The seller says he knocked some balancing weights or something when he put new front brakes in. The wobble only shakes the car, not the steering or anything else noticeable.

Also, the switches to change the vent system don't work, it stays on defrost. That isn't too much of a problem, Alberta winters are coming, brrr.

Does anyone have any insight to the wobble on this car? I would like to pick up a car before the snow flies and walking to school becomes unbearable. Let's just say this car is one classy ride, smooooooooth transmission and engine. Ohhh yeah!

The only weights that could get "knocked around" on/around a wheel that could cause vibration like that would be the weights on the inside/outside of the wheel that is used for balancing the wheel. Although I don't know how they accidentally get moved... mine are very secure.

Any tire shop should be able to pop it off and tell you fairly quickly if it's out of balance. Shouldn't be that much for them to balance them out for you as well.

Can you see the wheel wobble or just feel it while it's rolling? Does it increase with speed/turning? Are the wheel lugs on tight? :-p

I got the car in my possession now. The wobble only seems to happen around fifty km/h. You can notice it around thirty, but after sixty or so it goes away. I can't feel it at all turning. I guess I will take it to a tire shop and let them check it out. I don't know enough to fix this myself yet. One day...

Wheel balancing is done with a fairly expensive machine anyways, most people would need to go to a tire shop. Just don't let them sell you any shit you don't need!

We got ours in the same condition. Wobble turned out to be a worn out inner c/v joint and the heater problem was a broken vac line. Heater gets its vacume from the pass side at the rear of the engine. The line runs along the back of the engine and to a tee under the washer resivior.

Perhaps the *wobble* is belt shift in one or more of the tires. That can create a *rolling* effect in the car as it moves at a slower speed. If it is bad it can actually be seen..... from the rear if you are driving along behind the car in question the vehicle will slowly move sideways thru a circle (12 o'clock to 3 to 6 o'clock to 9 to 12 o'clock) as the speed comes up the roll gradually disappears.
