  • Question : Need more info on downforce/handling

    when it comes to aero and downforce, can any of you recommend a good book for it?

    I am doing research for further upgrade paths. I am looking to maximize streetable handling(smooth backroads), handling for local circle tracks and auto-X.

    I have lowered the car pretty far already but I have the rear a little higher which gives it a nice stance, but for handling is it beneficial or should i have the ride height set so the car is flat?

    from what little i have gathered so far increasing rear downforce is stupid unless the front downforce can be increased at an equal ratio.

    for practicality, i think the stock spoiler can be modified to increase downforce if a small piece of metal is attached to the back of it that sticks up a little. I think the technique was invented by gourney?? Dan or alex, whichever is the eldest. would that work on lower speeds? Or do i actually have to use a different spoiler?

    To increase front downforce, a chin spoiler can be cheaply made out of sheet metal and attached to the front bumper. i know that works. What I would like to know is if the shape of it is important. should it just hang straight down or would it be better to shape it like a > ? if so mow much better?

    lastly, how much benefit can be had if i made a belly pan out of sheetmetal and attached it to the bottom of the car?

    does any1 know the stock drag COEF?

    any other inputs or ideas are welcome too.

    here is some background:

    full coilover kit with stiff springs 400 front and 300 rear.
    as a result the rear suspension is now independant.
    replaced all bushings with poly.
    taken a few small steps to remove a little weight.
    stiffened the body some with front and rear stb's.
    added a 7/8 rear sway bar.
    added adjustable lateral arms.
    going to add sub frame connectors.
    i am in the process of having lee develop some tubular control arms which for my application will most likely have a differnt ball joint location.
    i am going to look into the feasibility of having my strut towers altered for camber adjustments.

    i will be looking into further weight reduction as long as it isn't too expensive.

    luckily, i will have help too. A family friend was recently re-discovered that runs a race shop that specializes in suspensions and fabrication of stock car style race cars. So once i get the last of these neat parts in, he will tune everything for me......for next to nothing!!

    The 7/8" rear STB is the Addco one your refering to, correct?

      rear sway bar yes, rear STB no. the rear stb was made by a wbody member that distributes the from time to time.

        The drag coefficient for my 88GP SE I believe is 0.29. I think it was the most aerodynamic production car of the time. Do a google search. It's a fairly common spec.

          Yea I have a figure of 0.299 for the TGP.
