  • Suspension and Handling

Hey guys I emailed this guy and he said he would have parts made for 94' and older W's in a couple months. What do you think of the coil over suspension? Good, Bad, What? Any body seen or used this product before?

Coil overs for the front or rear? If you want them for the rear, they are already available. They work nicely too!

i hurd that the rear coil overs that were made for the transvers leaf cars put to much strain on the upper shock mounts and after extended use could really screw up the car

You heard wrong. There are at least half a dozen people that have had coilovers for almost a year or longer with ZERO problems. That's just a myth being spread around.

He claims that the these cars rear towers have been stamped with the same guage steel as the new w-bodies. Also he's offering coilovers in front and rear apps, with various spring rates as well as variable spring rates.

it doesn't really matter if its a transverse leafspring, just about any car with shocks (notice i didn't say struts) would have the same problem, but alas, theres a billion people who does ths all the time, with no probs, they just brace the rear and all is right with the world.

Yeah, Dave is right. My 92 has had them on there since I have had the car (just over a year now). I don't store the car in the winter up in the air either. I figured that would be worse on the body then it is on the suspension. And who knows how long they have been on the car before I got it. The only person that I have heard of having a strut come the car through the rear deck to say hi! had really rusty upper strut mounts. When the strut made it's apperance, it was because the rust had eaten through the upper mount, causing the mount to fail, not the strut tower.

Also, I'm sure you removed the crappy mono leaf spring when you installed the coil-overs right????

If you didn't it would be the roughest ride ever. It would be like putting hockey pucks in instead of springs. Anyway you can find a whack of suspension and handling components including front and rear coilover kits. At: www.heldmotorsports.com

I've heard bad things about Held Motorsports. I would recommend getting the rear coilovers from: www.fastfwdperformance.com That's where I got mine from and I've had ZERO problems.

I can't say I've ever really checked out the W-Body suspension aside from on my buddy's Lumina.

But, if you have rear struts I wouldn't be worried about coilovers.

What I would be worried about is if you are mounting them in a normal shock-type setup with only one lower bolt.

On J/N/L bodies with normal shocks, it doesn't seem like the shock would really be able to withstand all the suspension weight on it. I installed coil over shock springs on my L body. It was great but, the lower shock bolt seems way too weak for the setup to be really stable. and the top of the shock is way too small of a theaded rod.

Also, I found with my rear Twist axle (like a solid axle kinda but, not) that I destroyed the bushings that held the rear suspension on with the coilovers. So, you may want to be sure that your bushings are up to par before adding springs where they origionally weren't located on the car.

Just wanted to warn the shock-type people.

Hey I eamiled that guy again at HELD Motorsports about the front and rear coil overs. Here's what he said:

                          Lyle,

The design is complete and I have a set of fronts on test right now. The
rear design is also complete, but I am waiting for parts to finish the first
set. If you can wait a little longer that would be great. I want to make
sure that I have a solid design and that there are no issues. I can sell you
fronts now, but I want to be sure. Please understand.

Just thought you guys would be interested.

You should email them and ask what rate springs they recommend for the front and rear. I'm curious.

They say that you can choose the rate. He has from 200# to 500# in 25# increments as well as progressive rates as well. He say's that he will work with you to find the right rate for your application. I think that's pretty cool.
