  • 3400 = loud (finally started it up!)

Dude, a 3400 with no exhaust makes a lot of noise. I started it up yesterday just for a bit before everything was hooked up to see, and it lives! I can't wait to get the rest of the stuff hooked up and take her for a spin to see just how useless first gear has become, since it was even bad with the 2.8!

Just whoring since I am so happy!

Yeah I got my 3400 fired up last Saturday before I got the exhaust on it . It was loud also . I have a few tuning problems to take care of . but it should sound a lot better once I get the timing and A/F right .

I wish my 3100 was loud. Maybe if I took off the exhaust manifolds and ran open heads it would be too.

Mrgoodwrench: what are you using for computer? And did you have to fab any mounts to get that in the 3rd gen?

a 3400 sounds even better w/ a 2-1/2" piping hi-flow cat and single in dual out flowmaster, nice n raspy and sounds powerful.

          I am running a 3" pipe , 3" in/out high flow cat. , 3" in/out 36" resonator , into a 3" in / 2.5" out flowmaster series 80 . The resonator knocks out the raspy sound and makes a nice low bellowing sound .

That was what I was wanting when I installed the exhaust . I did an engine swap into a 2000 Cavalier and did'nt want it to sound like another engine with fartcan technology . When people pull up beside it they will know something is'nt right because of how the exhaust sounds .

            ARRRGH!

Yeah, so I came back from my week long "vacation" to the in-laws down in TN last night to find that my brother had driven the GP and the trans went out on him while he was driving it. I finished right about a week ago, got the exhaust done up, drove it around for a day, and got ready to start tuning it.

Fortunately I have a spare W body 282 and so I have spent today pulling the old one out. Now that I have it out, the input shaft seems not to want to turn.

It has a failure other than the differential failure, believe it or not. The old trans seems to have lost a shift fork internally or something, when I rolled the car into the garage it sounded like my old 71 Impala did when it was trying to go into two gears at once (which you can do on the old transmissions since the two shift rails have independent control outside the trans). I now have 33 dollars worth of GM's syncrhomesh so this shit better be the bomb diggity or else! So I am supposed to start work wednesday and here it is Tuesday morning and the cradle is sitting on my garage floor. Spiffy.

            Updates to follow.

Runs good with tranny number two! I get some catalytic sulphury smell from what I suspect is a pretty rich idle sometimes but it runs pretty good! Rips up to the speed limit in a couple quick shifts!

No EGR hooked up yet due to incompatibility until I make something to fix it, but so far not even a "CHECK ENGINE" light!

Might want a new o2 sensor. I replaced mine finally and picked up some mileage and power to my surprise! No more rich idle fumes!!! I think your 89 had a vacuum EGR, so disabling it will not set a code. So you're in luck there! I don't think it pulls fuel when it opens either since it's vacuum controled. So blocking it off should be all you need to do. I think the 3.1mpfi was first to use digital and will set a code of course.

I actually have a new O2 installed as it is, I think these things are open loop at idle, 0% TPS.

The EGR thing does have a fuel pull according to the code, so I want to get that set up to get the most of my mileage.

Do you happen to know what the deal is with using EGR valve bases as adaptors, or something? I think I would have to switch to a 99-earlier style plenum, but I can live with that I think.

Not sure what your EGR looks like, but I'm sure you could do soemthing like this probably:
                    http://60degreev6.com/showthread.php?t=24994

I'm doing that with my 3100, I had to get the EGR pipe/adapter from a junkyard 3.1mpfi of course, but it lets me run my EGR on the 2005 3500 plenum.

Yours is vacuum right? I'm guessing it has the removeable base on the pipe like the 3.1mpfi does. So you'd use that and mock it up similar.

WOW! that is awesome! Are you saying the 87-89 Vacuum EGR has the same style base plate as the 90-96?

I dont know. Maybe. Look and find out. What does yours look like? The EGR baseplate you need for that write up is like the 90-93 mfpi style. I have a 3100 so I had to go to the junkyard and get the base/tube from a 3.1mpfi motor. I'm going to use it to adapt my 3100 3soleniod digital EGR to the 2000+ style 3500 EGR mount.

But since you'rs is Vacuum, you can't use the 90-93 style since that's for the digital 3 soleniod style. BUT you might be able to take your old 87-89 baseplate and mock it up like what they did with the digital style in the write up.

Then again, it might not line up like the digital style. So you might not be lucky.. But look at it and see what you can come up with!!
