  • 1991 3.1 swap for a 1993 3.1 Questions

Well my luminas engine is at its last leg, i have a piston completely seperated from the rod, and its hitting the head while the rod is banging away inside.

I can get a Used 89k engine for $500 + tax... which is a decent price... i guess..

But according to the guy at the place he says that the AC bracket, and some other things are diffrent. I know that the harness is diffrent, and stuff of that sort. but what is all diffrent.

From my readings, i see that the 93 3.1 engine is actually a 3100 SFI engine?

So if that is true, i need the computer and harness with that engine too ?

please i need help fast, the car is up for registration, and smog this upcomming month.

the 93 3.1 is a 3.1 just like yours unless its from a cutlass, possibly an n-body as well, the cutlass changed to the 3100 mid year, the rest of gm with the exception of the lumina and maybe cavaliers changed in 94, and luminas changed in 95.

if it doesnt say 3.1 MPFI on top, i wouldnt do it because you don't have much time. around here that's alot of $ but everything costs more in california.

The engine is from a grand prix iirc. Will this be a drop in fit, i heard that some of the sensor locations are diffrent on the 93 compared to the 91?

would i need to get the harness and computer off that car also?

Lots of things i am wondering lol.

Also i have the crappy 3 speed 3t40 trans, if the car has a 4t60(e) would there be any differences with the engine?

i know there is no way i could pay for the engine and trans combo, it is hard enough to pay for that engine.

      Thanks for the input pat

A genII 3.1 is a genII 3.1. All sensor locatioons are the same, most sensors are even the same. Minor differences in body line and or gauge cluster options may use a different temp sender or oil pressure sender. Also the KS seems that it could differe from one body line to another. The nice thing is that you have the original 3.1 to pirate any sensors from, that you may need.

you can use your same ecm and harness.that ecm will run that motor just fine.you will need to reroute the connectors for the module.you also will need to get a new throttle cable for the 3100.

well my car has the 3 speed, and i already needed a new TV cable. mine was broken towards the end, the little rubber boot for it was ripped and almost gone.

From what i was told by patgizz, the 3.1 outta that GP is not a 3100. only if it was a cutlass then it would be or something of that sort. it is all above but i am in a hurry to type this and get to class.

So i should just changeover the obvious sensors?

My lumina had the Euro package, cluster and all that... yet it had a 3 speed wtf? lol

            any more good juicy info?

I just want all the details, and info anyone can give me on the subject. As much info as possible. i want to know what you all know

oh also is there any difference in the heads on the 93 compared to my 91? maybe roller rockers?? i would love that lol

No difference in the heads. Roller rockers didn't come about until mid-95 on some platforms, and 96 across the board.

awwww damn, thanks for the info.

i also was told that tha AC bracket is supposedly diffrent on the engine? i still have to talk to the guy, and see if the "engine" is a complete engine, if not i will slap him. haha. i will just use the long block off it if it is not a complete engine, and i will dick with him on that price a lot more lol. no way to pay $500 for an unkown used incomplete engine
