  • injectors suck! not the same size? why multec 2s, why?

Background: 2001 LA1 3400 from W body going into 1989 GP, stock 89 ECM, gonna get programmed.

So I pulled the multec 2s out and pulled out the 19lb/hr injectors out of my 1989 3800, with the intent to swap traditional injectors into 3400. When I line em up side by side though, the O-rings appear to different distances apart top to bottom! How can I put old injectors in when the o-rings are in different places?

    Thanks

    Kurt

PS pics coming as soon as I go back downstairs and WTF a lil more.

here are some pics of the injectors side by side.

Ummm, put them in and bolt it all down.

    I don't see the confusion.

The confusion is that I am trying to fill the gap between the intake port and the fuel rail that used to be filled with injectors that were a little over 2.75" from seal to seal, with different injectors that are a little less than 2.625" from seal to seal. I went downstairs and experimented some more. What this amounts to is that I can wiggle the injector up, and it will not seal at the intake port, or I can wiggle it down and it will not seal at the fuel rail. Has no one else had this problem on a 00+ swap before?
The little retainer clips from the multec 2s are not compatible with the multec 1s and the clips from the 3800s multec 1s don't work with the new fuel rail. I am considering cutting down the fuel rail mount bosses about 1/4" to make the fuel rail holdown bolts actually draw the rail down enough to engage both seals, but it seems like this shouldn't be necesary.

I am saying that it appears that wiggled up or down to the extremes, it appears that it could leak.

            Hmmm, haven't had that problem.

You could try, bend the retaining bars so that the rails themselves sit closer to the intake.

Before you do anything, you are running a stock 3400 with an '89 2.8 program?

That was the intention. I was going to use a Moates Ostrich, Tunercat RT, and some patience. That was why I was asking earlier about calculating the BPC. Until I can figure out how to manipulate an EGR adaptor, I was just gonna run the $6D code teh car came with, with a tweaked BPC (which will account for the cyl disp and injector variation) and turn the EGR off in the code. Maybe find someone to beg to let me plug in their wideband and fix the VE tables for the better VE of the 3400.

I think what I am going to do is grind down about 3/16" off the fuel rail mounting bosses to close the distance between the rail and the injectors a bit.

I don't think you need to be using 3800 injectors with a 2.8 3.1 program. You'll flood it out royally, esspecially if its's stock. You best run the 2.8/3.1 injectors, better yet 3300V6 injectors will work better. When you are ready to tune, use the red band 3400 Multec1 injectors.

With a recalculated BPC, the size of the injector should be irrelevant. Anyways, whether I use the 2.8/3.1 14.7 pounders or the 3800 injectors (which I have more confidence in the condition of) they both are shorter than the new-style injectors. If I could find some of the red-bands for free I would definitely pop those in, but since there usually aren't a lot of free injectors kickin around mid-michigan, I am going this route.

Well I think I am just as new at, really. I am in Midland, MI, about an hour north of Flint, MI on I-75. When I finish putting this motor in, I would be down for a test and tune session sometime.
